I received an Aquasana AQ-5300 Water Filter to facilitate this drinking water filters review. All opinions are my own.

Rinsing organic fruit and vegetables in tap water seems stupid – now I use filtered water!
I believe in water filters. I am not a fan of the chemicals that my municipality puts into my water like chlorine and flouride. I’ve been using a water filter for some time, but it was a counter system that filled bottles. That was great, but I wanted more.
Drinking Water Filters
I decided it was time to invest in a more convenient and instant water filtering system. While I would have loved a whole-house system, at around $700 it wasn’t in our budget. Thankfully we live in an area with pretty great municipal water so it really isn’t necessary, so we opted for an under counter filter in the kitchen.
If you’re a renter or aren’t comfortable with drilling holes through your sink or countertop, there is an alternative that sits on your counter, but for me, I wanted to regain the counter space my current filter was taking up.
Aquasana Under Counter Water Filters
We settled on the Aquasana AQ-5300 model for several reasons. Like all of their models it filters out 61 contaminants including chlorine and chloramines, but it leaves in the good minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium.
So why this one? Because of its higher capacity and a pre-filter for high sediment areas. The set of 3 filters should clean 600 gallons (approximately 6 months for the average user) at a cost of about 9 to 15 center per gallon of water (much cheaper than bottled water!).
Installing the Aquasana AQ-5300 Water Filter
Once we decided where to place the new filtered water faucet, the hubby got out the drill and put a hole in our old Formica countertop. For those that have upgraded to granite, you’ll be better off with a sink that has an auxiliary hole. Next he ran the hoses – one from the water supply into the filter and the other from the filter up to the new faucet. We had some leakage, which the instructions warned us about, so we had towels ready. After a few minutes the pressure built up inside the filter and the leaking stopped.
Total installation was under an hour and part of that time was just figuring out where to place the new filtered water tap on our 40-year old sink.
Using the Aquasana AQ-5300 Water Filter
Now I have filtered water available at the turn of the tap. I drink it, but more importantly I use it to wash my fruits and vegetables. I pay a premium price for organic produce and it always bugged me that I was washing them in water that had so many chemicals and contaminants in it.
But how does it taste? Like nothing. Exactly like water should!
We obviously haven’t had to chance the filters yet, but when it’s time they’re easy to snap in and out. I won’t need to disconnect the hoses or water lines – I love that!
How Aquasana Drinking Water Filters Work
I’m not going to pretend to understand the science of drinking water filters. What I do know is that water from our tap smells like chlorine – the water filtered through our Aquasana does not. For those who care about the science of it all, here’s what happens:
Aquasana Claryum™ filtration technology scientifically sequences several different technologies to achieve industry leading results. Activated carbon, catalytic carbon, ion-exchange and 0.5 micron mechanical filtration remove impurities while selectively leaving the healthy minerals in the water.
The filer is NSF Certified to remove over 97% of chlorine and chloramines in addition to lead, asbestos, herbicides, pesticides and many more, reducing over 60 common water contaminants.
Replacement Drinking Water Filter Costs
The Aquasana AQ-5300R replacement filter comes with a 90-day satisfaction guarantee and a 180-day warranty. (Extended warranty available with Water for Life.) Regular price: $64.99 for the 3 filters. Save with their Water for Life program which includes a 15% discount ($55.24), free shipping, and extended warranty on your filter system.
Since I’m the only one using the filter I suspect mine will last a little longer than 6 months, but at $50-$60 for 6 months worth of filtered water, it’s significantly cheaper than buying bottled water and so much better for the environment!
