My new butter crock is a great addition to the kitchen

My new Butter Bell

I love the Food Network show, “Unwrapped”. It focuses on how food and food products are made.  It wasn’t that long ago that I saw a show on a butter keeper and I thought to myself that we needed one.  I’m not a fan of processed food and prefer real, organic butter to the margarine and other unnatural choices that have filled the “butter” market.  The only downfall to organic butter is that there isn’t a “soft” version so to spread butter on rolls or toast I have to put a bit in the microwave to soften it.  Sometimes I’m just too lazy or don’t have the extra few seconds, so I take the cold butter and mutilate the bread trying to spread it.

I’d forgotten about the butter container I saw on the show until the other day. I was offered the chance to review it and I was thrilled!  It turns out it’s called a Butter Bell and its a staple that used to be in every kitchen before refrigerators came along.  In the 80’s, the L. Tremain company started making them again for people like me! (You can view the “Unwrapped” show I saw on the L. Tremain site)

How Does a Butter Bell Work?

Butter Bells are simple. They’re crocks made in two pieces.  The interior piece holds the butter and it’s placed into the exterior piece with a small amount of cold water.  That water makes a seal and keeps the butter fresh and it works with the crock to keep the butter spreadable but from going rancid.

Use & Care

My Butter Bell - Preparation and Filling

My Butter Bell – Preparation and Filling

Preparing the Bell to be filled is easy. Wash and rinse.  Next, take softened butter (1/2 hour on the counter was perfect) and with a knife, squish the butter into the Bell completely.  Smooth the top and you’re done!   Add 1/3 cup cold water into the base, turn the butter side upside down and place it inside the crock.  Now you don’t need to do a thing until 3 days later when you change the water!  Butter can stay in the Bell for up to 30 days as long as the water is changed out every 3 days.

My Butter Bell Filled & Ready to use

Changing the water may be our biggest issue. We don’t use a lot of butter and can go for a week or two between uses.  Plus, my husband has a rotating schedule so he doesn’t work the same days of the week and I work 7-days a week and never can tell the difference between weekdays and weekends.  For most people setting the task to a day should be easy – Soccer days, Church days – whatever predictable schedule you can get on should work fine.  For us, I’ve decided garbage day, Thursday.  It’s the only set thing we have.  I’m working on the other one.

Simple washing is all the Belle will need and it’s dishwasher safe! Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight and your butter should be perfect.  We love having fresh, spreadable butter ready without notice.  It’s a great addition to our kitchen and the fact that it’s adorable doesn’t hurt!  I chose the Antique Butter Bell Crock in yellow.  It’s a perfect match with my dinnerware with its French Country style and looks great on the counter.   If that style doesn’t work for your kitchen, there are plenty of other styles and colors to choose from.
