I’ll admit it. I assumed that if a movie went straight to home video it meant that it wasn’t good enough to be a theatrical release. Well I am publicly eating my words because Disney’s “The Pirate Fairy” is fabulous and yes, it’s a direct to video movie.

Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks has made its way to home video and is available on Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital HD, and On-Demand today. The film, starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, is a look back on the relationship between Disney and the writer P. L. Travers, and the struggle to obtain the rights to Mary Poppins.

I got a chance to see the new film, “Need for Speed,” a few weeks ago during a Disney Press Trip. This new film by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment is a down and dirty street racing movie with a fantasy edge. It’s filled with language, scantily clad girls, and intense street racing scenes. Of course they’re done well and seem very realistic, well most of them.

When I hear the term “rigging” in regards to a movie, the first thing I think of are actors strapped into harnesses flying above the stage ala Tinker Bell. It turns out that when it comes to animation, rigging is actually the underpinning that gives a character his/her shape and allows them to move. I found that out and so much more on a recent trip to Walt Disney Studios. It was there I got a chance to try my own hand at character rigging with the popular character Olaf from FROZEN.
