I received an AirTamer A315 personal air purifier to facilitate this review; all opinions are my own.
It’s cold and flu season again and as headlines are already predicting and worse than usual season, I’m working on ways to make sure I don’t get sick. I will get a flu shot and do most every year, but that’s not always enough. I eat a healthy diet, take vitamins, and try to get enough sleep to arm my body for the upcoming onslaught of germs. Plus, I’ve already stocked my cabinets with things I’ll need should my defenses let me down. But, I want to work on preventing viruses from getting a hold on me, and since many germs are airborne and enter through normal breathing, that’s the first place I looked for a solution.
Earlier this year we had several weeks of bad air quality due to wildfires in Eastern Washington and Canada. It was at that time that I purchased a room-size air purifier. My husband said it’d never work, but I had faith, and it did! So when I was offered the chance to try out a personal air purifier I said yes!
About the AirTamer A315
What I received was tiny little device is called an AirTamer® A315. It’s about the size of a deck of cards, and it can sit nearby or even be worn around your neck on the provided conductive lanyard or clipped to your shirt. This lightweight and on-the-go design is made for people who commute or travel so that in the car, bus, plane, or train anyone can breathe cleaner air.
The AirTamer A315 is powered by a USB-cable which charges its internal battery so it can be used without being tethered to an outlet. I found it lasted about 24 hours on the maximum setting, but obviously, a lower setting will enable the battery to last longer (the user manual states up to 30 hours of run time on one charge). It can also be used while plugged in to an electrical outlet and while charging, so you’re never without clean air.
The AirTamer A315 includes a battery level indicator (four green lights mean it’s 100% charged, three lights indicate you have 75% left, etc.), as well as a green blinking, led to let you know it’s cleaning the air (i.e., it’s emitting ions). The ion emission brush is replaceable, but there are no filters to clean or replace which makes it nearly maintenance free. Additionally, this tiny unit provides clean air within a 3ft radius, and it does it silently without the use of a motor or fan as negative ions do all of the air filtering.
How Does the AirTamer A315 Work?
I will not pretend to know the science behind how an air purifier works. Here’s how the manufacturer describes the process:
Similar to the A310 and A302, the stylish A315 emits a constant stream of healthy negative ions that force airborne pollutants away from your personal space giving you a zone of cleaner, healthier air. With the addition of a premium, replaceable lanyard and a convenient battery level monitor, the A315 is the latest in personal ionizer technology.
AirTamer® emits over 2 million negative ions per cubic centimeter every second – this is the highest cleaning power of any personal air purifier in the world – by a factor of 9!
Negative ions (air molecules with extra electrons) are electrically charged particles in the air that remove airborne contaminates and have been shown to have a rejuvenating effect upon our bodies. The best natural generator of negative ions is lightning, followed by ocean surf, waterfalls, mountains and forests. In clean, natural air, you’ll find the highest concentrations of negative ions. In polluted cities and confined spaces, like offices, you’ll find the highest concentrations of unhealthier positive ions.- airtamer.com

Does the AirTamer A315 Work?
But does the little AirTamer A315 work? Well, I do feel a slight tingling when it’s near my face which the manufacturer says is the ions being emitted from the ion emitter brush, so I’m going to say that yes, it does. Plus, after watching the cigarette smoke demonstration video above, I’m convinced. It doesn’t clear the amount of air my large room model does, but it’s meant to handle the area around my face, and it appears to be doing it well.
Tips for Using Your AirTamer
Make sure the Negative Ion Emitter is pointed toward your face, and the conductive lanyard is touching your skin if you’re wearing it. If you’re not wearing the unit, put the lanyard behind it and spread it out over the surface it’s sitting on.
Don’t touch the negative ion emitter or allow it to contact any conductive material as it can reduce the generation of ions. Especially important to know is that if the on/off button is on, you shouldn’t allow the negative ion emitter to touch any solid surface as it can reduce its life. Additionally, before storing the unit in its storage box, be sure the unit is turned off.
Down with the Flu and It’s My Fault
But can a personal air purifier stop me from getting sick with the flu? Well, for now, we’ll never know. That’s because I forgot to pack my AirTamer when I went on vacation to visit my grandkids and I came home with the flu. Darn it! They’re adorable children, but they’re natural germ magnets! You can be sure I won’t forget my AirTamer personal air purifier on my next trip, and I’m using it now hoping to keep new viruses at bay.
By the way, the holiday season is coming quickly, and the AirTamer is the PERFECT gift for someone who suffers from allergies or is subjected to second-hand cigarette smoke. If you have a senior in the family, he or she would probably benefit as well! The AirTamer is available in black or white and includes a travel case. There are additional models available including room-size air purifiers.
