I have tried just about every organic baking mix that’s come on the market in my area so you can imagine how excited I was to find a new contender in this field while shopping on Amazon recently named Foodstirs.
Foodstirs was the answer to the problem of wanting to eat clean and know where ingredients come from for a group of friends which included actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Their goal in creating this new line of organic baking mixes and baking kits was to use ingredients that are sustainably sourced and completely free of artificial dyes. And they wanted to use only Fair Trade chocolate and cocoa, heirloom flour, and [amazon_textlink asin=’B077KD4YDH’ text=’Wholesome! Baking From Scratch vs. Foodstirs Baking Mixes
I just don’t bake enough to keep even the smallest bag of organic flour and sugar around, so for me, baking from scratch WITH Foodstirs is more economical as there isn’t any waste. Plus, I don’t have to buy the spices and other ingredients that I only need a small amount of – again, less waste. Plus, like any traditional cake or cookie mix, it’s convenient to use a premeasured box of ingredients with my fresh ingredients to make a sweet treat in just minutes, but that’s freshly baked at home, and with quality ingredients.
But how do they taste? Amazing! I purchased a 3-pack Variety pack of baking mixes from Amazon.com that included the Foodstirs‘ Snickerdoodle Blondie Mix, Chocolate Lovers Brownie Mix, and Brooklyn Salted Chocolate Chip Brownie Mix. Each requires just a few additional fresh ingredients to make an 8″x8″ pan of baked goodness.
The first box I baked was the Snickerdoodle Blondie Mix. By adding fresh organic butter and eggs, I had homemade from “scratch” bar cookies that were every bit as good as my homemade snickerdoodle cookies, only faster and easier. They were so moist and delicious! At about $6.99 for an 8″x 8″ pan of bar cookies (the mix plus fresh ingredients), I think it’s a phenomenal deal. You’d pay $4 for a single bar at Starbucks, and it wouldn’t be organic!
I didn’t take a photo of the finished product because I didn’t buy the Foodstirs baking mixes to review them. I ate two of the moist and chewy bars and sent the rest to the fire station with my husband because I knew if they stayed at home, I’d eat the entire pan. Yes, they’re that good. They were gone in minutes once the guys got a taste of them and they were impressed with my baking skills!
Update 2/11/18 – I baked the Brooklyn Salted Chocolate Chip Brownie Mix tonight. I added 1 cup of chopped pecans because we’re nut lovers. And, because the salt for the topping was packaged separately, I was able to add just a bit to one side of the pan of brownies and leave my side salt-free! These brownies are beyond moist. They’re chewy, sweet (but not too sweet!), and so decadent!
Where to Buy Foodstirs – Organic Baking Mixes, Kits & Subscription Box
Amazon has several of the Foodstirs variety packs available on Subscribe & Save (Save up to 15% and receive FREE shipping on thousands of products (learn more about Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program here). Amazon also sells single boxes of the organic baking mixes, but watch out for 3rd party sellers who are inflating the prices.
While FoodStir baking mixes are available on Amazon, it’s on their website where they sell some fantastic looking baking kits. I was so excited to see a rainbow cake made with all-natural dyes instead of those technicolor food dyes most people use that are made with chemicals, many which are known to cause cancer. Sure, this rainbow cake isn’t quite as bright as the traditional food coloring, but once you’ve had a child vomit up a neon green Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cake, you’ll realize that there’s way too much color in them. Yes, that happened to us once, and all we could do was put him in the bathtub so that he didn’t stain anything else. Gross!
Natural & Organic Baking Subscription Box
FoodStirs also has a bi-monthly baking club. Sign up for 1-, 3-, 6-, or 12-baking kits and the themed boxes will arrive with almost everything you need to complete the project. Just add the fresh ingredients called for in the recipe which can include eggs, butter, oil, water, milk, etc., and spend a few minutes mixing and you’re done! Of course, the longer the subscription, the lower the kit price becomes. There’s also a gift subscription option for 3-, 6-, or 12- kits.
The Foodstirs March 2017’s Subscription Baking Kit was Oscar-themed with Movie Night Cupcakes. The vanilla cupcake kit included bite-sized vegan marshmallows (a must for this vegetarian and a thoughtful choice – don’t worry, vegan marshmallows taste amazing – they just don’t have gelatin as an ingredient), naturally colored yellow sparkling sugar, vanilla cake mix, vanilla frosting mix, and six baking cups.
Recommended Organic Baking Mixes
We also love Annie’s Homegrown Organic Baking Mixes (and refrigerated cut & bake options – especially her cinnamon rolls – yum!). I want to like the Immaculate Organic Baking mixes, but sadly, I’ve been disappointed by every product that I’ve tried in their line.
Have you tried an organic baking mix I should check out?
