This discussion about pet health insurance is brought to you by Healthy Paws Pet Insurance®; all opinions are my own.
I don’t remember my childhood dogs having as many illnesses and vet visits as our dogs do. Both of our dogs have chronic health issues that take quite a bit of our time and a heck of a lot of our money. We thought we were making a smart decision when we purchased a discount plan for their vet. What we didn’t understand is that it gives us discounts on some services and wellness coverage, what it doesn’t do is help with the financial burden of a serious illness or injury.
But I’ve discovered that there is health insurance for pets. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance® covers up to 90% of vet bills and has been rated by customers as the #1 pet insurance. It lets owners decided how to care for their pet without having to consider the cost. That’s something we’ve had to do far too many times in the last few years. There’s so much guilt involved – we love our pets, but at some point, we just have to say we can’t afford it.
When our first Maltese, Missy, a foster dog we adopted, ran under my van tires and , we rushed her to an emergency pet clinic (read Missy’s Story and my regret and guilt in injuring her and Gracie’s Story – My Gracie and How Her Name Reminds Me to Be Kind to Myself ).
After $500 to stabilize and diagnose her, we were faced with a $1200 surgery with no guarantees that she would survive, walk, or ever be pain-free. We made the decision to let her go. Just reliving that choice I am transported right back into that emergency room, holding my sweet little girl, and realizing we were choosing euthanasia. A decision I never wanted to make and I hated myself for causing her so much pain.
If it seems like pet health care costs are increasing, they are. That’s because more clinics can care for pets with illnesses that were untreatable in the past. Vet offices have technology that provides human-level health care, and that adds to the fees. With the Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, instead of getting hit with an enormous bill, you’ll be avoiding unexpected veterinary bills, and you can choose the pet insurance plan that fits your family’s budget.
Pet insurance covers unexpected accidents or illnesses and other health issues related to them. It doesn’t cover wellness care including regular vaccines, check-ups, or flea, tick, or heartworm preventative, etc. But what it does cover is illnesses, accidents, hereditary conditions, congenital and chronic conditions, cancer, diagnostic treatment, x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medications, emergency and specialty care, and alternative treatment. Oh, and they are the only pet insurance company that provides unlimited lifetime benefits with an annual deductible. Yep, I feel like an idiot for buying the wrong type of coverage for my dogs.
I’d sign up both of my dogs tomorrow if I could, but my little girls can’t be covered because pet insurance doesn’t accept pets with pre-existing conditions. Gracie, my 6-year old Maltese, has Protein-losing Enteropathy (PLE) and Jewel, my 9-year old Pomeranian lost the use of her back legs nearly two years. Because the only way to diagnose Jewel would be to pay for X-rays, ultrasounds, and more and the “fix” would likely be surgery, we don’t really know for sure what caused her brain to stop controlling her back legs.
The cost to care for these two is quite a lot. Had I only covered them back when we purchased the wellness plan. That’s a mistake I won’t be making again. Should we decide to get a new puppy in the future, she’ll be covered in the event of an illness or accident the day we bring her home.
Pet Insurance vs Wellness Care
Educate yourself about the differences between pet insurance and a pet wellness care contract. Decide which is right for your family and your pet. Don’t put yourself in the position of having to make a life or death decision for your beloved pet based on the costs of treating her. I’ve had to make the decision for our two dogs and cat. It’s a decision I loathe making, but I know I’ll have to do it again soon.

Have you had to make a choice between putting a pet to sleep or going into debt to provide their care? Do you have pet insurance? I’d love to hear how it helps you care for your pet.
I had to put my girl down because she needed an emergency operation that we couldn’t afford. No vet would work with us and she was suffering. Now, health insurance can prevent things like that from happening.
I swear I was just talking to a family friend and asking them if there is a such thing as pet insurance. Well this definitely answers it and its good to know!
Pets really are part of the family. I feel so sad for Jewel, such a cuddly puppy. Insurance will help a lot but I feel bad that conditions before having one is not covered. Well, policies.
Thanks for the clarification on pre-existing conditions. When we decide to get a pup, we’ll do our best to get the insurance ASAP.
Honestly, I’ve never thought about pet insurance before. Thanks for the informative post. It’s really going to help especially since we want the best for our pets.
I wonder if my DIL has this… she loves her pooches so much I am sure she does. I’m going to check though, just in case.
Thankfully, we’ve always been able to pay for emergencies. However, I would hate to get stuck in a spot where I couldn’t.
I am so sorry to hear about both of your furbabies but so happy for you that you can rely on your pet insurance to help you through these difficult times. With two furbabies of my own I am going to read up on this insurance and am going to make sure that my boys are protected- thank you so much for sharing this resource!
We had to put our pug down who was having a lot of seizures. The mother of all hit the day we put him down. We were given the option of paying over $2000 just for a test, but really, the cost was way more than we could afford, especially for a sick dog. If we had insurance, we definitely would have had the test just to ease our minds over our decision.
I’m so sorry for your loss. And yes, it’s the thousands (or even hundreds) of dollars just to test and confirm the diagnosis. In the end, the result is the same. 🙁
Awh I am so sorry about your furbabies!!! I am going to look into this!
I want to get pet insurance for our cats. I know how expensive an unexpected vet trip can be.
Pet insurance can be such a help. Vet visits can get pricey.
This sounds like a great insurance plan for pets. I didn’t know that you could purchase pet insurance.
Vet visits are always so expensive. I’m glad there’s finally insurance for my furbabies.
Gracie’s “discounted” office visit yesterday $150. This is to get meds for a condition she has and the office visit itself is free. I’m still trying to figure out how it ended up being so expensive. But she’s worth it and she’s getting better.
Pet insurance is so important to have. It can save you a ton of money on everything from vet visits to major emergencies.
I am so sorry to hear about your pets health problems. This really awesome that they can get insurance, I had no idea this existed. I will have to pass this information on to my pet owner friends and family.
Pet insurance is such a worthwhile investment. Pets are a part of the family and you never know when an emergency may occur.
This is great! We had health insurance for out pets in the US. It really saved us a good bit of money when our Great Dane had to get his Cherry Eye fixed 3 times.
Yikes, off to Google “Cherry Eye.” So sorry you experienced that!
Oh no, so much has happened to your and your little loves. I am sorry to hear that. We have two dogs that are still young and thankfully healthy, but I know as they age their costs will go up a ton. This is really important to have pet insurance.
My girls were both young when they got sick. Gracie was four and Jewel 6.
Wow! That’s definitely great insurance if it’s covering 90% of vet bills. Those vet bills can definitely add up!
I’m sorry to hear your pets have had so many problems. Sounds like pet insurance is the way to go!
Awww I am so sorry about your baby. It is never an easy decision to make and I have had to face that once as well :(. We did not have insurance at the time either which made us have to make that choice. We do now though its a must for us our pets are our family as much as our kiddos.
