Most of us spent the long winter months hibernating indoors which means our dogs haven´t gotten quite as much exercise as they should. It´s hard to get them out there for those walks or outdoor play when it´s cold, raining, and dark before you can even make it home from work. Now that the weather is warmer, and summer is knocking on our door, it´s time to break out the toys and leashes and get your pets back into shape with some outdoor play. Engaging through play can help your dog experience exercise as fun and strengthens that human and dog bond. Here are a couple of great toys to assist with the summer play.

Chuckit!® Sport LX Launchers System

This new Chuckit gets the whole family including the pets outside and active for some quality play time. It includes two launchers and a medium tennis ball so that multiple family members can play. The lacrosse style basket allows throwing and catching, plus Chuckit’s signature hands-free, slobber-free pickup. You can toss the ball further with minimal effort than if you were to throw it by hand. You can also play a Monkey-in-the-middle type game with your dog, making them go back and forth with ease. Of course, let them catch the ball once in awhile so that they feel included during this play time, after all, it is technically a dog toy.

This product is also great if you´re someone like me who enjoys sitting in the shade reading a book. I can stay put and use one hand to pick up the ball with the Chuckit and toss it all the way across the yard. It lets me enjoy what I’m doing while keeping my active pup, Roo, occupied. He´s the type of dog that never wants to stop playing.

Chuckit!® Hydro Toys

Summer days can be scorching, and we have to make sure we keep our furbabies hydrated. What better way to do that than with Chuckit! Hydro Toys. These toys are designed to dispense water during play. It’s hard for me to get Roo to stop playing and take a drink of water. So with our Hydro Flyer, he´s getting to play his favorite game of fetch/ attack the water while taking a little drink at the same time. Roo has never had a big interest in flying disc toys, but he loves to attack water whether it be from a kiddie pool, sprinkler, or hose. With the Hydro Flyer, all you do is submerge it in water, toss it, and it sprays when thrown. The spraying water caught Roo´s attention and made this a toy that needed to be caught instead of one that he ignored. For a longer bit of play that doesn`t involve you throwing the ball around, the Hydro Freeze Ball is a great option. You freeze water in the ball for 2 hours, and it slowly melts over time. Our dogs love licking ice cubes, so this gives them the same enjoyment on a larger scale so that they aren`t done in 5 mins. The Chuckit! Hydro Toy line also includes the Hydro Squeeze Ball, Hydro Squeeze Duo Tug, Hydro Squeeze Bumper, and Hydro Roller. All of the toys have the signature blue and orange coloring that make them visible in water or on land.

If these don’t sound like the right fit for you and your pup, Petmate also offers glow in the dark leashes and collars for walks and runs during cooler parts of the day and JW Helmet Heads for those pets that need to get back into shape at a slower pace. They are well worth the price and will last for a long time for dogs that don´t have the habit of trying to destroy every toy they get. Luckily Roo believes outdoor toys are worth keeping around. Of course, remember to always practice safe play by avoiding hot asphalt which can damage or burn your dog’s feet and make sure they are staying hydrated throughout those hot summer days.
