Valentine’s Day is a fun holiday to share with your kids. But instead of giving them candy or other sweet treats, how about these books? There are plenty of sugar-free options that kids will enjoy long after all the candy wrappers have been tossed out.
A simple story for pre-school children with the message that working together means you won’t always get your way; but it does mean that by combining strengths and talents, you could end up with something far greater than you could have created on your own.
A sweet little board book that can open up the conversation about things we can do for our loved ones instead of buying them. Kids love to predict the rhymes of this short story.
This book, like all of Carle’s work, is beautiful. The text is perfect for young readers. It’s also a fabulous gift for a child to give to a favorite caregiver, teacher, or grandparent. It’s a beautiful expression of love and a treasure.
Toddlers will love this board book by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. Its simplistic story and cute illustrations will have them saying “Happy Valentine’s Day” to all of their friends.
Mercer Mayer’s illustrations convey the character’s feelings beautifully, and they’re paired in this book with lift-the-flap surprises on every other page.
Perfect for kids ages 3-5, its watercolor and ink illustrations show young Cornelia’s story as she takes hearts collected while out walking to create unique valentines for her friends. The book includes a heart sticker.
This cute but simple story includes all of your favorite characters. Oliva is determined to make the best Valentine cards for her friends and neighbors.
This Valentine-themed board book has Ollie looking for a Valentine. Everyone else, Gertie, Peedie, BooBoo, and Gossie, already have theirs. His search brings him a special surprise Valentine of his own.
In this interactive book, Elmo can’t decide who to give his beautiful big valentine to! Toddlers play Cupid as they pass Elmo’s Valentine among the other Sesame Street characters by moving it from pocket to pocket.

These were some of my kids favorite books when they were little, I still have them on the bookshelf 🙂 I love the idea of non candy options, they can keep these gifts to make traditions they’ll celebrate with their own kids!
These are great gifts for Valentines day. I like to give something other then candy to the kids. I will have to pick up a few copies of Love The Hungry Caterpillar.
Snuggling with my littles & sharing a sweet Valentine’s Day story sounds like a lovely way to spend the day. I’ll have to nab a few of these book choices.
I want my grandchildren to grow up learning to love reading books. I do get them a lot of books and even if they can’t read yet, it is the pictures and the bedtime reading activities that stimulate their learning. I’m going to get 2 or 3 books from your list, although all of them look awesome.
I love this idea so much! My kids absolutely love books, and they would flip out if they had a little gift bag full of books. They will be too distracted to realize they didn’t get any candy lol!
