Norm of the North Movie

I’d like to introduce you to Norm. He’s starring in Norm of the North which opens January 15, and I’m here to make sure you know about this fun guy! Norm is a polar bear of many words.  He’s a bit grumpy because he’s being pushed out of the Arctic by a developer bent on building luxury condos in his backyard. To escape his crisis at home, he takes off on an adventure to New York City!   Along with his entourage of ragtag lemmings, he takes on the Big Apple and Big Business, but it leads to a big identity crisis. Can Norm save the day and his beloved home?

Norm of the North-Inspired DIY Crafts & Recipes

Kids and parent’s alike are going to fall in love with Norm. He’s two parts pure sass and one part adorable. His look changes from fierce to friendly with the tilt of his head, lift of his eyebrow, and a bright as day smile. He inspired me to create a free Norm of the North crochet pillow pattern (see below). It’s a 13″ fluffy pillow with Norm’s sweet grin to lay your head on.

CROCHET NOTES:

BLO – crochet in the back loop only
Sl St – Slip Stitch

PATTERN NOTES:
  • The 2hdc creates a “hole” which lines up to create wedges. Check often to make sure you’re on track.
  • 21 rounds fit my 13″ pillow form – your gauge and yarn may vary, so measure your crochet and finish off when it’s the size of your pillow form.
  • Want a more rounded and less hexagon shape? Change row 21 to a row of all single crochet instead on both front and back.

Sew the nose in place on the pillow front, stuffing with polyfill as you do.

Eyes
Make 2 – Crochet BLO and in the round

Row 1:  – With turquoise, Ch 3, 11hdc in first Ch, Sl St in the top of beginning chain (lazy man’s magic circle). Pull the tail to tighten the circle. (12 St)
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in same St, 2hdc in next Stitch, 2 sc in next 3 Sts, 2hdc in next 3 Sts, 2sc in next 3 Sts, 2hdc in next St, Sl St in top of beginning Ch. (24 Sts)

Row 4:  Ch 2, hdc in same St, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, Sl next 24 st, 2 sc next St, 2hdc next St, sl in top of Ch. (35 st)
Row 5: Sl st in each stitch around. Finish off. Bury tail.

Single crochet into place on the pillow by pinning the eyes in place and then with white (or pale gray) single crochet through a stitch in the eye and anchor it with a stitch on the pillow face. Continue in each stitch of the eye.

Pupils
Make 2 – with black, BLO, Ch 3. 3hdc in the first chain. Fasten off and pull the loop thread tightly. Bury tail. Sew in place on top of the iris through all layers. With the white yarn and darning needle, add a highlight in each pupil.

Ears
Make 2

Row 1 With white yarn and 4.0 mm hook, Ch 12 then sc in the 2nd Ch from hook and then sc in the next 10 stitches (11 st) turn,
Row 2: Ch 1, sc 10, Sl st in last stitch, turn,
Row 3: Ch 1, sc 10, turn,
Row 4, Ch 1, sc 9. Sl st in last stitch, turn,
Row 5: Ch 1, sc 9, turn,
Row 7: Ch 1,  4sc, turn, Sl st in last stitch, turn,
Row 8, Ch 1, sc 2, Sl st in next stitch, turn,
Row 9, Ch 1, sc 1, Sl st in next stitch, don’t fasten off.

Finishing:  Single crochet around the outside of the ear through top loop only, adding 3 sc in the outside edges (points made) and not on the inside ear that attaches to the head. This will pull the edges up creating a small curl to the ear. Finish off. NOTE: Make sure you turn one ear before adding the single crochet trim, so you have a left and right ear – verify the second ear is correct before starting your edging and turn if necessary.

Pink Center of Ear
With pink yarn, Ch 4. 2hdc and 1sc in first Ch. Finish off, pull tightly. Sew to inside of each ear being careful to go through the top loops only of the white so the pink yarn doesn’t show through on the back. Finish off.

Sew the ears to the head firmly.

Finishing:
MOUTH & EYEBROWS: With one Strand of black yarn, use a satin stitch to create a mouth (outline with a running stitch and then fill with a satin stitch for the best coverage).
Do the same with the eyebrows – create eyebrows that give your Norm attitude! Or go soft and sweet like mine.

Sew the pillow together by placing wrong sides together around the pillow insert and using a Sl StipStitch to close, matching up the Stitches from the front and back.
