I cannot make pie crust. Oh I’ve tried several times, and people say they’re fine, but I don’t enjoy making them. Unfortunately, my family loves eating them so when the holidays come around I cheat and use frozen pies. But I use good quality frozen pies like Marie Callender’s that look, smell, and taste like homemade.

It turns out I’m not the only person preparing a holiday dinner that uses a little help from the grocery store’s freezer case.  December is a favorite month for buying pies. More than 11 million are sold with 4 million sold the week before Christmas alone. According to a survey completed by Marie Callender’s in 2014, pumpkin is the number one favorite pie followed by pecan and then apple. They also found that 58% of Millennials (ages 18-24) would serve a frozen dessert instead of making one from scratch only if they were guaranteed no one would find out.

I usually bake frozen pies in one of my pie plates, but not because I’m trying to fool anyone, I just think they cook and serve better in glass. Plus the crust gives it away – it’s much better than any crust I’ve ever put together.

I’m happy to give over some of my holiday baking to the experts, and that’s why I invite Marie Calender’s pies to our table. Starting with a Marie Callender’s pie gives me time to do other things like last minute wrapping and visiting with the family. Their pies are affordable, and since I prefer the fruit versions, they’re less expensive than purchasing the berries and creating my own. But I put my own signature on them by adding toppings or sauces.  One of my favorite toppings is to add sliced almonds and top with almond whipped cream. That’s the exactly what I did with a Marie Callender’s Razzleberry pie. The almond is the perfect flavor companion for the fresh tasting and just-right sweet berries.
