A Ruggable sample was provided to facilitate this review; however, all opinions are my own.
I always blamed the kids for our dirty carpet. But it wasn’t just them. It’s my husband who refuses to take off his work boots before he enters the house and it’s the dogs who let’s be honest, would rather pee on my rug than go outside when it’s cold and raining. Since we live in Seattle, that became a problem.
Like many people, we pulled out all of the wall to wall carpeting in our home and put in a solid surface floor. While I love the look and how easy it is to clean, I admit I miss the splash of color an area rug can provide. But we’ll never go back to wall-to-wall carpeting – once we pulled our up to see what was hidden below, there’s now way we could ever live with a installed carpet again.
We tried putting out a few area rugs and the girls gleefully christened them. But that meant I was back to finding a rug cleaner and attacking the areas with paper towels. We tried the washable carpet tiles, but they’re very expensive and cleaning them meant taking them outside to hose them down (remember, I live in Seattle, it’s cold and wet, so they took forever to dry), and it bugged me that the patterns didn’t match up.
Ruggable – A Washable 2-piece System
Recently I was introduced to a new solution called Ruggable®. It’s a 2-piece rug system that consists of a pad that keeps it the rug in place and gives it a tiny bit of cushion, plus a top cover that can be washed in the washing machine! Unlike other machine washable throw rugs with a rubber backing, this 2-piece system allows you clean them separately. The pad is hand washed and hung to dry so won’t disintegrate when cleaned. Since the pad is covered by the water-resistant top piece, it rarely needs cleaning. It also is water-resistant and non-slip, so it stays put without any additional pads.
How Does a Ruggable Work?

The folks who created Ruggable were kind enough to send me a 8′ x 10′ rug to try out in the playroom we’re creating for our granddaughter who’s due in March 2016. I’d envisioned a very different room for her, but when the rug arrived, I was inspired to put together a whimsical forest friends playroom!
The Modern Fretwork pattern in rich tan is the perfect backdrop for our playroom, but it would be equally fantastic in a living room or dining room. The 8′ x 10′ is a new size for them, so it’s only available in a limited selection of colors including a rich solid chenille navy blue and perfectly neutral solid chenille natural.
Ruggable’s are available in three additional sizes – 3′ x 5′ throw rugs, 2.5′ x 7′ runners, and 5′ x 7′ accent rugs. Colors include tobacco, gray, aqua, red, navy blue, natural, tan, black, and even a winter white. Patterns are popular geometric patterns, transitional (I love the floral tiles), and contemporary.
While the area rug I received is very low-pile, they do carry the chenille rug as well as a shag. But for a playroom that will be seeing trains, strollers, cars, games, dolls, tea parties, crafts, and more, this is a perfect choice.
Putting the Ruggable in place is no more difficult that putting a sheet on a bed. In fact, unlike the video, I don’t roll mine up. I just stand above it, throw it out like a sheet, and let it land. There’s plenty of wiggle room, and there’s no need for a precise match up. It couldn’t be easier. It’s super lightweight and only takes one person to place it.
Ruggable: Our Play Test
We’re still working on the playroom. I fell while we were on vacation and tore my collar bone from my shoulder, so the decorating is on hold while I heal. But we’ve already tested out the Ruggable with a friend’s 13-month old son, and it passed the test for comfort and playability. Little Liam spent most of his time on the floor playing with toys or trying to run us all over with a walker. He had no trouble with traction and took great glee in chasing us all over the room.
I can’t imagine how different the playroom would have been without the inspiration of this area rug. It’s amazing what a little color and pattern can do for one’s creativity.
We love this Ruggable® so much we’re considering purchasing one for the hallway and my husband’s side of the bed. He misses the warm floor in the morning, and since we know the girls will use it as a potty pad on occasion, being able to stand up to repeated washings is a must.
My son and daughter-in-law are considering one for my granddaughter’s nursery too. They’ve already seen the benefit of a washable rug – keeping dust and allergens at bay is just one of reason, their two dogs is another. Plus the pattern and color are the perfect neutrals to create their dream nursery around.
Ruggable: Where to Buy
Pricing for these affordable and washable area rugs start at $79.99. They’re available from the Ruggable website, Kohl’s, and Amazon. For those of you in California, you’ll find their 5′ x 7′ sizes at Lowes Stores.

I really love the chevron pattern of your rug! I’m definitely a fan of area rugs as I hate having carpet because it can get so dirty at our house and is miserable to clean. I’ll be peeking at these on Amazon!
