Descendants 2 – Disney Announces Sequel in Development
We knew when we watched the Disney Descendants movie, that the story makers had found a fabulous new way to share Disney stories with a new generation. These hip teens are the children of the characters their parents love, so they’ve been pulled into this new movie as well. So it’s no surprise that Disney has announced that a sequel is in development.
Descendants 2 (working title) comes after the original ranked as the Disney Channel’s fifth highest-rated movie of all time. The Descendants DVD was released on July 31. It has become Disney’s #1 TV movie and their 3rd best-selling TV title on DVD, 2015 to-date. In the US, Disney Channel takes six of the top 7 original cable movie releases with High School Musical 2, Teen Beach Movie, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, Descendants, Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, and Camp Rock.
The popularity of the original film means we’ll see multiple franchise opportunities which translates into more products and tie-ins across the Disney company. That includes publishing where Melissa de la Cruz will write, “Return to the Isle of the Lost” which will be published in May 2016. It’s part of the ongoing “Descendants” publishing program. The first two books, “The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel” and “Descendants,” have been on the New York Times Best Seller list for combined total of 41 weeks.
There’s also an animated short-form series, “Descendants: Wicked World,” which debuted on the Disney Channel in September. This look into the worlds of Auradon and Isle of the Lost has been seen by 5.9 million total viewers on the channel and YouTube. In July, a Descendants Karaoke App was released ($5.99 on iTunes – get the app). It reached #1 in the kids 9-11 age category in the US and three other countries. Next, a “Descendants” mobile game will launch in November.
The music of The “Descendants” has done phenomenally as well. The“Descendants” soundtrack entered the Billboard 200 at #1. “Believe” and “Rotten to the Core,” have garnered over 254 million views on DisneyMusicVevo.
Of course there have been Descendant dolls, apparel, costumes, bedding, DIY, crafts, electronics and more already released. Products have been licensed through Hasbro, Jaya, Mad Engine, Innovative Designs, Markwins, KIDdesigns, among others, and new products will continue rolling out through 2016.
