The best part of any celebration is the cake. I can’t think of many events that don’t make it the centerpiece for the event. Wedding cakes are designed with great care to express the couple’s personal style. Birthday cakes are created in fabulous shapes, colors, and more to evoke a feeling of whimsy. Cake is featured at baby showers and is a popular way to reveal the baby’s gender with the color of the icing. It just wouldn’t be a celebration without cake!
But sometimes the it’s fun to mark the smaller events in life. Like, well. Thursday. That’s what we recently celebrated. OK, it may have been a made up event just to create an excuse to bake a cake. But now that there are just two of us, we just can’t eat a whole cake, so it’s hard to justify giving into a craving. It’s a crying shame to have to throw it away and no, I can’t toss the uneaten part in the freezer because I hate the taste of a cake that’s been frozen – yuck! If I’m going to indulge, I want it to be delicious!
Let ME Eat Cake!
So what’s a small family to do? Or a family with members who don’t like cake? GASP! How is that even possible? Well, I live with one of those people so it’s pretty rare when he’ll eat more than a sliver leaving the rest for me. In the past, when a cake craving hit, I’d ask the hubby to bring a cupcake home from the store. But they are overpriced and their idea of frosting is one made with shortening – yuck!
Now when I need a little cake treat, I’ll ask him to bring a Duncan Hines Perfect Size cake mix kit! They come complete with cake and frosting mixes plus a 6″ round pan to bake in!
The disposable pan doesn’t’ require any preparation and is designed to help the cake pop out of the pan after cooling. Mine stuck a bit, and I could have carefully removed the stuck section and replaced it on the still warm cake and no one would have ever known. But I chose to pull it off and taste test it!
While the Duncan Hines Perfect Size cake mixes create a single 6″ layer, that’s perfect for 2-4 people. They do take a few minutes longer to cook because of the disposable pan which requires a lower baking temperature. But you’re rewarded for those few extra minutes with a cake that rises more evenly. I baked my Duncan Hines Perfect Size Lemon Bliss cake in the toaster oven on one of the hottest days this summer. It was perfect not having to heat up our large oven when the kitchen temp was already in the 90s.
Duncan Hines Perfect Size Cake Kits
These new cake kits are available in the baking section of your local grocery store. You’ll find them in five flavors:
- Chocolate Lover’s (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting)
- Red Velvet Dream (red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting)
- Lemon Bliss (lemon cake with lemon frosting)
- Strawberries and Crème (strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting)
- Golden Fudge (golden cake with chocolate frosting)
Both the cake and the frosting mix require butter and that’s what makes these great. I do hope that they eventually use all-natural colors and flavors. I’d also love to see a Confetti Birthday cake option with two 3″ disposable pans and a single candle – wouldn’t that be perfect!
What Will You Celebrate?
We’re out of birthdays until November so until then, I’m just going to keep celebrating Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and maybe even Sunday.
What holiday would you celebrate with a Duncan Hines Perfect Size cake kit?
