About an hour north of Seattle, you’ll find a fun and unique place called Outback Kangaroo Farm. Located in Arlington, this is an interactive petting zoo and working farm full of exotic animals — and you can get up close and personal with them. Literally.
The Outback Kangaroo Farm contains — you guessed it — plenty of kangaroos. These animals are bottle-fed from the time they’re born, making them tame and comfortable around humans. (Just make sure you follow the farm’s strict rules — no jumping, running or yelling!) The farm offers guided tours of the property four times per day, Wednesday through Sunday, where you can enter the kangaroo pen to meet, pet and feed the animals. My boys LOVED this; their favorite part was letting the kangaroos eat tiny pieces of bread right out of their hands.

But that’s not all. The tour also includes visits with the rest of the animals housed at the farm, including lemurs, donkeys, an ostrich, llamas and various peacocks that run wild on the property. The tour lasts 40 minutes, including intermittent stops to pet all the animals and take plenty of photos. I recommend wearing close-toed shoes as all the paths are packed dirt, and it can get pretty dusty (or muddy, in the rainy season). You also can’t bring in purses or food, as safety precautions, so leave those in the car. Strollers are fine.
I had never heard of this place until I saw an online article about it — and then decided we had to check it out. Where else are you going to meet a kangaroo than in Australia?! If you live near Seattle, the drive to Arlington can make for a long day. I recommend stopping for lunch along the way. And, if the tour you’re planning to take is full, you have to wait two hours for the next one. I recommend getting there a half hour before your tour time just in case. Besides that, this farm is worth a visit!
Things To Do With Kids In Seattle: Outback Kangaroo Farm – When to Go
The Outback Kangaroo Farm tour times are 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm daily, Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday). The tour costs $9 for children 2-12; $10 for adults; and $8 for seniors. Group discounts are available for parties of 15 or more — this could be a super fun birthday party destination. The kangaroo farm is open March 1 through October 30, with tours available by appointment only during the remaining months.
