Over the past three weeks, my family and I have had a lot of funny stepping outside the box to read during the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. The Challenge is a free online reading program in its ninth year designed to help kids stay motivated and interested in reading all summer long. Scholastic has created many fun, interactive games and challenges on their site to help kids find reading enjoyable.
This year Scholastic teamed up with Energizer and created the “Power-Up & Read” theme to encourage families to find new ways to make reading fun. We embarked on several out-of-the-box reading challenges this month with our plush Energizer Bunny!
The Challenge was to find new and different ways to add more reading time into our everyday routines. We carried books in our new Scholastic book tote so we could read on-the-go! Keeping the kids entertained on car rides is easy with a great tote filled with fabulous books.
We also took our Scholastic books and our new friend to read on while on vacation. Changing up our routine to read outside in the fresh air was a lot of fun for us both.
And of course, we cozied up with our Bunny and Scholastic books before bedtime at home.
This month’s weekly reading challenges helped us to read in more places and remind us that we can read anywhere and at any time, and that made reading more exciting and fun for my kids!
Monday Minutes Goals #MondayMinutesGoals
This summer Scholastic also started another creative and interesting way to help kids log as many minutes as possible and break the world record for summer reading. They just introduced #MondayMinutesGoals to set weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday Scholastic will announce a #MondayMinutesGoal to motivate kids to reach those number of minutes together in one week. #MondayMinutesGoals is an excellent way to keep your children active in reading by helping them maintain their momentum and share their success!
Other ways you can help them stay involved is to have your kids log their minutes on the Summer Reading Challenge website. You can share their success with friends and family by taking a photo of your children displaying their minutes and share it via social media. Use the hashtags #MondayMinutesGoal and #SummerReading and then see how other kids are doing on their challenges!
