I think it’s important to incorporate reading into our daily routines. It has so many positive benefits for my daughter. It allows her mind to explode with creativity, and it gives her a chance to discover new things.

Summer Reading 2015: Ways to Avoid Summer Slide

In the summer, our family finds it especially difficult to stick with our routines including making time to read. It turns out; we’re not alone.  In fact, it’s so common that it’s been dubbed, “Summer Slide.”  Studies have show that kids lose much of what they learned during the previous school year, especially if the don’t participate in learning activities during the summer and that can affect how they perform in the new school year.

“Research shows Teachers spend four to six weeks re-teaching materials to students because of the “summer-slide” (Alexander et. al, 2007).

Summer Reading 2015: Kids Can Win Prizes for Reading!

But this year we’re determined to keep our daughter motivated to read this summer (which can be hard to do), so we signed up for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. It’s a free online reading program that encourages parents and children to keep reading all summer long. It’s going on now and runs through September 4, 2015. During this time, kids can enter to win awesome prizes, earn digital rewards as they complete weekly challenges and log their reading minutes to help break last year’s world record of 304,749,861 minutes!

Since my daughter is too young to record the minutes herself,  I signed up for a parent account and I log on to record the number of minutes we read each day.  I can even do it on-the-go, and that means my daughter has more opportunities to earn digital rewards and badges when she hits reading milestones. It is fun to see if we made our weekly reading goal of 135 minutes each week!

I also love all the resources they have for parents such as free book lists (books kids love), free printables (by grade level), guides (homeschool resources, how to build the best home library for your child, how to support your child’s learning personality, and more), daily tips, parent videos on summer reading activities, and weekly contests parents can enter to win!

Summer Reading 2015: Incentives and Prizes

Do your kids need an incentive to turn away from the screens and get into reading? Check out the Summer Reading Challenge at www.scholastic.com/summer and sign up for free! 2015 is the 9th year Scholastic has been hosting the Summer Reading Challenge and each year they have a fresh theme to get kids and parents excited about reading. This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read” powered by Energizer. By partnering with Energizer, they’re able to provide some fantastic prizes!

Over the years, Scholastic has continued to add new resources and features to make the Summer Reading Challenge fun for kids. This year children can unlock twelve original short stories from a variety of popular children’s authors and watch exclusive never-before-seen videos from the writers! The authors include: Gordon Korman, Michael Northtrop, Maggie Stiefvater and Jackson Pierce, Varian Johnson, Jude Watson, R.L. Stine, Tui T. Sutherland, Blue Balliett, Lauren Tarshis, Wendy Wan-Long Shang, Patrik Henry Bass, and Roland Smith. Each story also contains a “read along” audio feature that allows children of all ages and reading abilities to experience these exciting stories. This audio innovation is particularly useful for my nearly 5-year old daughter who hasn’t quite reached that reading level!

Kids also have the opportunity to enter the monthly Klutz Books Sweepstakes as parents can enter the Energizer Instant Win Game for a chance to win a family trip to NYC. There’s also a new “innovation machine” game. This game is a creative writing game that allows kids to make up their own stories. I will admit that I logged in and played around with this game a bit, and even I had some fun with it!

There are so many interesting new things happening in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, please go check out all the ways Scholastic has made reading fun for our family this summer!
