I love spring and it’s definitely arrived here in Seattle! The last few days have been sunny and warm and that means the hubby has been out mending the winter damage to the garden and grass and I’m stuck inside working on my taxes. But spring also means a surge in home purchases and many of our friends have children who are purchasing their first home this year.
Housewarming Gifts
Housewarming gifts can be as simple as a plate of cookies or something more elaborate like a list of nearby restaurants and a gift card. But a meaningful and useful gift for any new home buyer would be a paper shredder. Why? Because it gives the gift of personal safety and makes identity theft just a little bit harder.
So many people are unaware that the “junk mail” they carelessly toss into their garbage so many times includes personal information. Think of the credit card and bank statements, leasing and loan documents, purchase and delivery contracts, and more that make their way into the trash flow. Once they leave your hands, you no longer have any control over what happens to that information. All a thief needs to do is pair it with easily purchased information online and they can accept your credit card offers and make purchases with the information on a credit card statement in minutes.
There are many ways to dispose of important papers but the most immediate and safest is with a good cross-cut shredder. We have two – one in the kitchen and the other in the garage – that way we have no excuse for being lazy and just tossing mail in the garbage. Both of them also shred plastic cards like debit and credit cards, as well as CDs and DVDs, so we can be sure that nothing sensitive ends up in the trash.
Fellowes M-12C Cross-Cut Shredder
[two_one_first]Both of our shredders are from Fellowes. The newest is the Fellowes M-12C shredder which has SafeSense Technology to keep curious little fingers from being harmed. It’s a perfect shredder for a new homeowner because it’s got a small footprint, runs great, cross-shreds which is the best cut for a shred that can’t be put back together easily by thieves (a single sheet is cut up into about 302 pieces), cuts up to twelve sheets of standard copy paper at a time, and the best feature yet, you don’t have to remove staples and paper clips before shredding! That’s because it’s strong enough to shred them too, right along with the paper. I can’t tell you how many times our old shredder jammed when a missed paperclip or staple accidently went through. The Fellowes M-12C shredder is a household rated model so it can run up to 5 minutes at a time before requiring and automatic cool down – you can shred a lot of paper at 12 sheets at a time in five minutes. The pull-out bin holds up to 4-gallons of shredded paper and it cuts paper up to 9″ wide.[/two_one_first] [two_one_second] Connect with Fellowes Online

Do you secure your identity by destroying your personal information?
My shredder is not working as well as it used to. I might need to get a new one! Thanks for the info.
I just had my debit card stolen so this is so helpful. I know that a shredder is SO important!
We shred all necessary papers – I think in this day and age it is a must do task.
I always have a shredder in our house but sometimes I’m just too lazy to shred.
We are too – that’s why we have two 🙂
I love that you don’t have to remove the staples! What a great feature.
This is a great housewarming gift idea. Everyone should have one.
I have a shredder that I keep forgetting to use. Thanks for this reminder after commenting I am going to get out now and start using it again.
We definitely shred everything with personal information on it!
We currently don’t have a shredder. I think it’s really important to get rid of important documents… Identity theft is scary!
We use our shredder a lot. I never thought about makign this a housewarming gift but it is a great idea!
Yes, I do. Thanks for the info. MY shredder broke so we need a new one.
We tend to break our shredders by not emptying them often enough – oops
What a neat idea. That does make a good and useful gift.
We really need a good shredder here. The portable one we have here has long since been outdated.
This is such a great idea. We don’t have a shredder, I think we definitely need to get one ASAP!
Shredding your mail is so important. Some people don’t realize just how serious identity theft is.
We have been needing a new paper shredder. This one looks great!
The shredder is an awesome housewarming gift. So practical. I wish someone got one for me when we got our first house. We can’t live without ours.
I didn’t realize how badly I needed a shredder until I got my first one. This shredder sounds like an awesome gift!
Isn’t that the truth! I think we’re on #3 or #4 – not bad for 27 years here and a bad habit of letting them get jammed by not emptying the bin often enough.
We have a Fellows paper shredder also and I love it. Definitely a great housewarming gift!
My old shredder died. This may be my new one!
I need a new shredder and am definitely going to look into this one.
Definitely get a cross-cut shredder – the smaller the cut the better. I’ve seen cheaper versions with strip cutters – it makes them much to easy to read and put back together.
I need to get a good shredder. I’m always concerned about who is seeing the papers that I throw in the trash can.
Exactly! Trash can be picked from the curb, from the transfer station, and from the dump. There’s no guarantee your information is safe if it’s just tossed in the garbage.
Interesting Choice for s Housewarming Gift… A Shredder. This might come in handy if the person is a small Business owner
Why would they need to be a small business owner? We shred anything that has any personal information on it and that means we shred every single day. How do you dispose of your sensitive info?
This is an awesome gift, because most people wouldn’t think to buy one for themselves!
