I wanted to give my son a watch for his Birthday. I know watches have been replaced by smartphones, but he’s a Park Ranger who writes tickets and needs to know the date and time and pulling out a phone for the info isn’t very professional.

I had some ideas of what he needed and as I shopped I realized that there were a lot of choices when it comes to men’s watches. Beyond basic watches, they’re are smart watches that extend the functionality of smartphones, and trendy watches which appear to be all about the design with very little thought about function.

He needed something that didn’t require mobile service since he works in remote parks so I decided against a smart watch. Besides, I have one and I rarely use it, it’s forever needed to be repaired with my phone. Who needs that hassle everyday.

But he did need a watch that was backlit for nighttime (which begins at 4pm here in the winter) and one that wasn’t too large as he’s tall but thin. It seems every watch I bought was ENORMOUS on him. I finally found one that fit and that had most of the features he needed, but no backlighting. Weirdly it’s one of the harder features to find.
