I have several great cameras, but they all serve a special purpose. My Samsung Galaxy camera is perfect for on-the-road blogging as it allows me to Tweet and send Facebook updates right from the camera. I also have an older Canon which has been my blogging camera for years, but it’s one step down from the DSLR, so it doesn’t have interchangeable lenses so no bokken blur which is a must for food bloggers.
So this year for Christmas I gifted myself with a new camera, but to do so, I spent hours poring over features and specs online and I realized I needed some hands-on time to make my final decision. So I headed to my local Best Buy store to get a closer look. Thankfully I was aided by a very helpful and knowledgeable sales rep who was a camera buff himself so after listening to my needs, we narrowed down my choices to two. One of which wasn’t even on my radar before I walked into the store.
I loved having all the brands I was interested in, in one place so I could compare them side by side. Nikon, Sony, Samsung, and more were available for me to hold, manipulate, and ponder. When I asked a question he didn’t know, he’d look it up on his handy tablet to make sure he gave me the correct information because goodness knows the technology changes so darn quickly it’s hard to know all the details on every camera.
I walked out that day knowing I’d made the best choice and although they didn’t have my camera in stock at the time, I was able to order it online. I’ve had it about 3 weeks now and love every single thing about it. I’m convinced my trip to the store made the difference because the camera I intended to buy was the first one I struck from the list after holding it and realizing that I would truly miss the articulated screen my previous camera had and it was something I definitely needed in a new one.
So what’d I pick? A Samsung with Wi-Fi (though I don’t use the camera’s Wi-Fi, instead I use a Wi-Fi memory card), interchangeable lenses, auto focus, and that articulated screen that it turns out I can’t live without.
What’s the right camera for you? One that you’ll use and enjoy. It may not be the same one I chose, but getting your hands on them and figuring out what features are important to you will help you choose. It’s a big expense; you want to have it for 4-5 years before you look for a new one.
A small sampling of cameras you’ll find at Best Buy:

I’ve been dropping hints for one of these cameras alllll season! I really am hoping for a new camera for – if it’s not under my tree then I’m definitely going to treat myself to one in the new year! 😉
I’m a big believer of going into the store and feeling it and seeing if you’re comfortable with it. Sometimes I’ve surprised myself by liking or not liking things when I actually saw them up close.
I’m searching for a camera for one of my nieces. She’s only 9 years old, but she has taken a liking to photography. Thanks for the great options!
