I’ve had these burlap bags for awhile and I knew they’d make great reusable bags for Christmas. I decided to stencil them so I cut a stencil with my electronic cutter. If you don’t have one, you can trace letters onto shelf paper and use it as a pseudo stencil, or use a letter stencil and paint the letters one by one covering the other letters adjacent.
Before I started stenciling, I wrapped a piece of cardboard with paper towels and put it inside the bag to absorb any extra paint and prevent it from leaking through to the back of the bag. I used my favorite paint, Martha Stewart Pearl paint in a fabulous color, Rubber Ball. Yes, it’s very reminiscent of the playground balls we all grew up with playing Dodge Ball!
Using a sponge brush, pouncer, or stencil brush, always stencil straight up and down with a nearly dry brush so the paint doesn’t seep under the stencil. Pounch your brush in the paint and then on a paper towel to evenly distribute the paint and remove the majority of it.
While I had the red paint out, I painted small silver jingle bells with the same red paint. I used wooden shish kabob skewers to hold the bells for easier painting and drying. I completed 2 coats for a sheer color wash.
While the paint dried, I created labels for the flours. I intended to print and cut with my electronic cutter, but I haven’t quite figured that out yet, so I printed them on sticker paper and cut them out with scissors.
Next, I created tags for the gifts. I didn’t have any print paper available because my paper supplies are stuck in transit somewhere where there’s snow, so I had to make do with what I had on hand. I used white cardstock and added Washi paper. Then I cut out tags with the Fiskars tag maker. Thank goodness I had a manual backup plan since I’m so new with the cutter. When I gain more experience I’ll be able to print and then cut them out on my own.
I added raffia to the tags and words cut from the only other cardstock I had on hand, blue. It turns out the words are so tiny that it was a bit of a nightmare transferring the words and gluing them onto the cards. You can use a sharpie and purchased tags if you like.
Then I added some gold wire to string the jingle bells to decorate the wine bottles which technically aren’t ingredients, but a little something to sip while they’re making them. I wrapped green and white bakers twine around the necks of the flavored oils and tied them in a bow and I added red and white kitchen string to the gift labels.
Then I took the ravioli makers out of the boxes so they weren’t so bulky and I cut the boxes to keep the recipe on the back and I folded it to form a base for the products going into the bag and to support the ravioli maker to keep it upright. A put the bulk down inside the bag in one piece and then added the gift paper filler, tied the bag ties to the back, and wrapped a large red ribbon around each and tucked in the tag. That’s it!
Have you made pasta from scratch? Perhaps you need a kit for you, too!
That is the coolest! I love jute bags with stenciling. And I think that rustic look goes perfectly with the rustic feel of pasta. YAY!
I would love to make my own pasta from scratch. I hear it is so delicious, but time consuming. Those stenciled bags are the bee’s knees! I need to make some of my own now!
I would love to take a pasta making class! I’ve only attempted to make dough for pierogies before but would love to learn other pastas! What a great gift!
That would be such a great gift. I would love something like that.
This sounds like a really fun gift. I love making my own pasta.
This sounds like a great gift – Groupon has so many great products and services!
That is MY kind of gift! I’m the one who got excited about getting banquette bread pans for Christmas, though.
what a thoughtful gift, I love it! I have that same ravioli set too. Isn’t homemade pasta the best?!
Now that’s one heck of a fun groupon gift. I love the fact the pasta making class comes with wine. Makes it so much more authentic, don’t you think?
What an amazing gift idea!! ! I never thought of doing that before, and I bet they loved the gift!
What a cool and thoughtful gift! I would never have thought to put a kit together to go with the class!
Love the way you jazzed up the gift! I would totally love to receive that gift!!
