I received a Keurig 2.0 to facilitate this review; all opinions are my own.
Early mornings used to be so peaceful for me. During my first few years of teaching I found myself getting up a few mornings each week at 4:45 am to head to the gym before work. This was the only time I could find to get to the gym for my favorite kickboxing class and still be able to grade papers all night and make dinner.
As I left the gym at 6:15 am I felt rejuvenated, awake, and full of energy for the day. Most days I skipped my morning coffee, completely unheard of for someone whose first job was as a barista at a local coffee stand, followed by time in the Starbuck’s crew in college. I was happy in the morning and everyone hated me as I walked through the halls saying “Good Morning!” to passing teachers before students entered for the day.
Then motherhood hit. My almost-daily trips to the gym have been replaced with wiping poop, drying up puke, bouncing on a large exercise ball to keep the screaming baby from screaming, and trying to convince my 5 month old to nap and then it’s time to nurse, nurse, and still more nursing. The early morning hours when I used to run out the door to get to my class are now filled with me walking around like a zombie looking for the coffee pot.
But nursing an infant means I can’t consume large amounts of caffeine without suffering the consequences of it being passed to my child. For my sanity and her health, she needs to nap. But my old coffee maker was a carafe version so I found myself dumping out old coffee as I made a fresh pot each morning. And no, I cannot microwave old coffee, that’s a sin in my book – it has to be fresh! Between my nursing and a husband that travels a lot for work, I found myself juggling with a large coffee pot that really was only needed a few mornings each week.
Keurig 2.0 – Coffee in the Volume We Need, Every Day
So I was beyond delighted to come across the Keurig 2.0 with the capability to make either a single cup or an entire 4 cup carafe for those moments when others want to join in on a good cup of coffee or tea. I have the ability to make one cup for myself in the morning at the push of a button without jeopardizing the “sleep training” schedule all moms strive to achieve for their own good. Plus on mornings when my husband is home, I can brew multiple cups at one time in the carafe. All I have to do is remove the metal tray at the base, replace the space with the carafe, and drop in the larger K-carafe packs – it’s that simple!
As a coffee lover I was concerned the larger carafe size might not brew the quality of coffee I was looking for or in the quick brew quantity I’d need to serve other, but my concerns were quickly put to rest after just one use. Just a week after receiving the Keurig 2.0 I had the opportunity to use it during a large family party at my house for my parents’ anniversary and I found having the carafe option made serving fresh coffee to my guests simple and convenient. The coffee was brewed in a timely manner and was a huge hit.
The carafe that is included with the Keurig 2.0 works great when you’re planning to consume the entire amount in a short amount of time, unfortunately, if you’d rather sip on the coffee throughout the course of a morning, the coffee quickly gets cold while resting in a plastic carafe without insulation.
Keurig 2.0 – Set up & Use
The Keurig 2.0 was very simple to set up and program with custom light options and backgrounds for the touch screen (mine is currently set with a blue light in the water with a blue screen). The machine not only produces quality coffee, but also allows for hot water to be dispersed in amounts up to six ounces at a time which is perfect for the night time tea my husband and I enjoy.
With the programmable features on the Keurig 2.0 you can set the machine to have your carafe fresh when you wake up, but you’ll have to press that button manually in the morning if you’re hoping to enjoy only one cup as this feature does not work for the single cups.
The Keurig 2.0 allows for me to jump, or sort of waddle, out of bed each morning and create a hot, fresh cup of coffee at the push of a button. I really like and appreciate the option of a single cup or carafe when preparing a cup for me and a nice full travel mug for my hubby. I love that I no longer waste coffee each morning, don’t have to rinse out the coffee pot, grind the coffee, or replace the coffee filter each day.
With the Keurig 2.0 making a delicious cup of coffee, or larger carafe for those of you who like to get crazy, is as simple as pressing that beautiful button that brings joy to your morning.
Do you find there are times when you’re limited by your coffee maker?
