Into the Woods” stars Meryl Streep. Need I say more? I adore her and believe she’s one of the few true actresses out there that can take on any role.  That’s just one of the reasons that I have this film on my list of must-see holiday films this year. She’s joined by a fabulous cast of characters, including Johnny Depp, who plays a sly villain in the film.

Into the Woods“” is a twist on the fairy tales created by the Brothers Grimm. It intertwines the plots of several stories to create a unique story – think of it as a mashup if you will.

The classic characters of Cinderella played by Anna Kendrick, Little Red Riding Hood portrayed by Lilla CrawfordJack (and the Beanstalk) played by Daniel Huttlestone, and my personal favorite, Rapunzel portrayed by MacKensize Mauzy, are all brought together  in this story of a baker and his wife who want to start a family.  Tragically, they encounter a witch, played by Merly Streep, who puts a curse on the pair (portrayed by Emily Blunt and James Corden).

The film is based on the musical play by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine which premiered in 1987 on Broadway. It ran for 764 performance and won Tony® Awards  for best score and best book. Lapine recreated that Broadway show into a film by taking on the  screenwriting role.

The film’s producers are Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt (he produced Wicked), and Callum McDougall with Rob Marshall doubling as director.  Marshal has directed such award-winning films as  “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Sondheim, a musical legend, proceeded the musics and lyrics which include a  new song he’s written just for the film.

In addition to the amazing cast already mentioned, you’ll also find Chris Pine, Tracy Ullman, Christine Baranski, Johnny Depp, Billy Magnussen, Tammy
Blanchard, Lucy Punch, Frances de la Tour, Simon Russell Beale, Richard Glover, Joanna Riding, Annette Crosbie. That’s a lot of incredible talent in this film.
