I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Cortizone-10. I received a product sample to facilitate my summer first aid kit creation as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.
Dry skin, check! Insect bites, check! Sunburn itch, check! Yep, it’s summer and that’s when it seems one of us is suffering from these common issues caused by being outdoors enjoying the sunshine.
But you can combat all that with a simple summer first aid kit filled with the items you need. But commercial kits have so many items that will never be used and end up drying up long before they’re used. So I’ve created my own kit that’s cheap, can be made up of stuff you already have on hand, and can be put in a container or bag you already have, and most importantly it’s the stuff you’ll need!
My DIY Summer First Aid Kit
- Waterproof Container: I prefer a hard case, but a fabric or plastic pocket with a closure will work as well.
- Cortizone-10: For itching, bug bites, rash, psoriasis, eczema, and dry skin.
- Triple Antibiotic Ointment: To prevent infections in scratches, punctures, and open wounds.
- Ibuprofen: Headaches and muscle aches.
- Acetaminophen: Headaches and fever.
- Bandages: Two basic shapes and in two sizes – small and large.
- Hand Sanitizer: To use before applying first aid.
- Tweezers: For getting out splinters
- Sewing Kit: Includes needles, thread, safety pin, and more.
- Nail Clippers: Doubles as a cutter, but used to nip pesky hangnails and broken nails
Cortizone-10 gets a spot in my first aid kit is because it’s easy to apply, has 7 moisturizers and 3 vitamins that nurture the skin, it relieves the irritation and itching so the skin can heal, and it works. It’s been a staple in our home for decades. It also makes giving first aid for minor skin issues simple – if it’s bleeding use triple antibiotic ointment, for everything else use Cortizone-10.
That’s it! Simple items that you will use when you’re out and about enjoying summer. Plus it’s small enough to pack in your suitcase for your next trip or throw in your beach bag. I wrote the contents on the back of mine with a permanent marker, but you could easily do something nicer; even decorate the container if you like.

How do you handle summer skin emergencies? Have you packed your first aid kit yet?
It’s important to have a first aid kit at home, especially when you have kids around. Thanks for the helpful tips!
So important! You never know when you need to grab and go to take care of an owie!
Sanitizer is high on our list.. germs are everywhere! knock on wood so far no splinters.
a first aid kit is always important to have especially with kids.
Although I have no children and I live alone I really should have a kit like this in my apartment! It never fails–just as I cut myself I realize I have no antibiotic cream or band aides in the house!
We’re currently without small ones in our home, though we’re hoping for grand kids in a few years! So yes, even homes without little ones need basic first aid supplies. Plus they’re handy when the neighbor boy crashes on his bike, again, in front of our house. That poor kid is a klutz 🙂
I made a kit of our own for our cabin. Having hydrocortizone in the kit is essential.
Especially at a cabin! So many poisonous plants that cause skin irritation! Does your cabin have a guest room? I’d be happy to bring my first aid kit 😉
I have a few of these in my home, garage, purse and car. I forgot tweezers! I never even thought about adding that, thanks! Throwing in a few pairs now.
Tweezers = must have 🙂 It amazing how many things you can do with them – like emergency screwdrivers (I’ve put my glasses back together with them) and they’re great for puncturing the hard plastic shell cases that EVERYTHING comes packaged in now when you’re in the car.
I need to remember tweezers! The kids are always getting splinters, yet I never have them around.
Tweezers and first aid tape! Sometime putting a piece of first aid tape on it and pulling it off in the opposite direction of how the splinter went in will pull it out painlessly. If not, tweezers to the rescue! 🙂
What a great list for a first aid kit! I always forget the tweezers.
Thanks Kelly! Evidently you’re not alone! Besides, at my age, that means emergency chin hair removal on the go 😉
This is a cute first aid kit and a really good idea! Right now my little guys have at least 3 bug bites each! We live in the country so we are surrounded by wooden areas. So each year I am stocked up on stuff to make the itch go away 🙂
Bug bites! Yes, they’re a summer nightmare when it comes time to go to bed and the kids can’t sleep because of the itching!
