Best-selling author Jennifer Probst shares why Nate, the hero in Searching for Perfect, is one of her hottest heroes to date.
By Jennifer Probst
I love alpha males.
Preferably billionaires. Issue laden, scarred, gorgeous, with custom made suits, and an aura of sheer power radiating from their figure.
Imagine my surprise when I began my new book, Searching for Perfect, and craved to write a different type of male lead. Beta. Nerd. Scientist. Socially awkward, clueless with women, and a bit hard on the yes.
Yeah, I wasn’t sure if it was gonna work either.
But somehow it did more than worked. It exploded. And I must say Nate Ellison Raymond Dunkle could be one of my all-time fave heroes I’ve ever written. Early response from readers say they agree. One reader told me she never liked book boyfriends but Nate got into her heart and soul.

The challenge? How to get a reader to be patient, to see what’s underneath, to fall in love AND in lust with him?
First, I think everyone loves the makeover trope/story. I gobbled up teen movies where the girl crushed on the hot guy, but she was nerdy and ignored, and someone made her over and suddenly she was this gorgeous hotty everyone stared at in school and she finally got the guy to notice and they fell in love. Sigh. I couldn’t get enough of them.
There’s something about a guy who’s a hot mess. Women want to help. Enter Kennedy. Of course, she never believed she could actually fall for such a guy- and Nate agrees. The first thing he does is realize she’s way higher on the hot list than he is, and it would never work. But my rocket scientist has balls. He goes for the kiss. He goes for the try. Somehow, he believes in himself enough in the core, and that balances the book.
Oh, and he’s great in bed.
Imagine a man who has studied sex manuals, erotic romance novels, and reads women magazines all in the hunt of pleasing a woman. Imagine this same man in the bedroom, intent on wringing out every ounce of your pleasure, for as long as it takes?
Umm, yeah. He’s hot.
And as each physical layer is tweaked, from his hair, to his clothes, to his social demeanor, we see what has always been there. One smoking, intelligent, humorous beta, who becomes all alpha in bed.
Sign. Me. Up.
My favorite part about Nate? He’s funny. Really funny. Sarcastic, witty, sharp. And since my heroine is one of the most difficult characters I’ve ever written, she needs that balance. She needs someone with the patience and fortitude that only Nate has.
I hope you enjoy Searching for Perfect and my fresh take on My Fair Lady story.
The up-and-coming matchmaking agency Kinnections is the hottest thing to hit Verily, New York—just like Kennedy Ashe, social director for the service she owns with her two best girlfriends. A coach, consultant, and cheerleader rolled into one super-sizzling package, Kennedy creates dream dates, encourages singles to shine, and never refuses a challenge—not even Nate Ellison Raymond Dunkle, rocket scientist, nerd extraordinaire, and Kennedy’s newest client.
Kennedy vows to work her magic and transform this hot mess in a lab coat with a disastrous relationship track record into the most wanted man on the Verily dating scene. If only she could turn the wand on herself…though she radiates confidence and sex appeal, Kennedy harbors deep-seated insecurities from a tormented past and lifelong struggle with weight issues. When she realizes she and Nate are cut from the same cloth and might be perfect together, can Kennedy learn to let her heart lead the way? Or will her fears sentence her to the sidelines as Nate finds love—with someone else?
