I purchased HUNDREDS of skeins of Bernat’s Waverly yarn because I love its softness and colors and they’re discontinuing it. It’s been fun having so much yarn to work with and I finally made a weekend afghan because I had so much yarn to spare. Weekend afghans are usually created with a very large crochet hook and multiple strands at once to create a thick and lush afghan, but they take a lot of yarn.
I made this throw for my mom from four different Waverly yarn colors using three strands at a time. It took me about 6 hours over two days but mostly because I was experimenting with stitches and color changes. Now that I’m more comfortable, I could recreate this in about 4 hrs.
Hi Connie, I love the pattern. BUT, I printed it per your icon and it printed “12” pages of the comments before I even got to print the pattern.. That is a lot of wasted ink and paper.. Is there a way you can adjust your settings to just print your wonderful pattern?
Thank you
I wanted to kno the exact colors in this blanket. The colors are beautiful.
The colors are listed, but the yarn is discontinued. Sorry.
Are there 2 rows of Double Crochets, with the solid color?
Hi Connie,
I was hoping you would have a ‘how to’ video for this pattern or step by step picture instructions for a visual. Thank you
I keep planning on doing a video but there’s just not enough time in the day. Sorry.
Hi Connie. I’m a new to crocheting and I love this pattern. I’ve started the afghan and I’ve gotten through row 6. However, I just realized it says to add the 3rd strand of color, chain 1 and and double crochet to last chain for a total of 52 single crochets. Then row 7 says chain2 and double crochet for 52 double crochets.
Should row 6 have been chain 1 and then single crochet for 52 crochets, or are rows 6 and 7 both double crochets? HELP!
I’m lost! :'( I really want to make this but need a visual to help me start it!
Where do I find the instructions for this afghan ?
Would like to try this pattern. However, how do I get it to print the free pattern copy? Thanks for your reply.
The pattern is on page two – use the navigation at the bottom of the page.
Can you send me the pattern please? 😀
Here are the patterns: https://babytoboomer.com/frozen-amigurumi-patterns/
Hi there. Thank you so very much for sharing your beautiful pattern. Will definitely be making a few of these. I am going to do mine using 2 strands of worsted weight instead of 3. I am thinking one strand will be a solid and the other a variegated. I think the common thread will be the variegated one but the solid will change every 6 rows. I will use colors from the variegated thread to be the solids. I hope this makes sense. Will make sure to give you a picture when I have it figured out!!
I can’t wait to see it!
Hi Connie!
Love the looks of this pattern and I was wondering can I use just two strands of yarn together? Also I love using (I love This Yarn) from Hobby Lobby and wondering if I can use that. I cant hold much in my hands so kind of curious!
Sure, you can do 2 strands, it will just change the look of it a bit. For instance you can change out the colors more often so the stripes are thinner or transition the colors slower. I’d love to see what you create!
How can I get this pattern? I click everywhere and it doesn’t link me to anything. Can I use the big and bulky yarn (6)?
The pattern starts on page 2 – there are page numbers at the bottom of the text. Yes, you can use big and bulky yarn, but your resulting blanket will be much thicker or use fewer strands.
How do I get this pattern.
Check your in box 🙂
I did not see the blanket in just two colors. The one with four colors not sure on it you started by single stitches then next row double crochet each row u change stitches then row 4/7 each row is single stitch then row 7 double again can u change and keep doing each row like in the beginning or is there a reason you changed stitches. Please text me back so I understand can’t wait to start
Hi there – I updated the pattern so hopefully it makes more sense. The 2nd blanket is an alternative pattern, not a 2-color pattern though you could certainly make it one by using 2-strands of each color.
If I wanted to make this using 3 colors all the way through, never changing, how much of each color would I need?
You’d need even numbers of skeins of the three colors, but the total skeins would stay the same.
I love to crochet but haven’t done so in a long time. I still have lots of yarn so maybe I’ll try this.
What hook size did you use?
Size Q Crochet Hook 🙂
Thanks, sorry, I saw that after I posted and it was too late to take it back! LOL
Thank you for the pattern I can’t wait to give it a try! 😀
I just started crocheting. but your patterns seems easy. Thanks for the free patterns. I am going to busy next weekend! ☺
Hi Connie, what are your thoughts on making this with cotton DK yarn? Or should I stick to acrylic? Thanks so much, this is going to be a great last minute gift for someone I know!
I like cotton myself, but it’s definitely a different texture. I’ve made kid’s size cotton afghans but haven’t done a full size as of yet. Personally, I’d like it. I’d love to see what you make!
Hello! I love this stich, but I am very new to chrocheting. Can you tell me,how to get 3 strands of yarn at the same time? Am I using 3 skeins of yarn or cutting 3 strands?
3 skeins at a time (or sometimes if two of my colors are the same, I’ll pull the end and the beginning of one skein, but boy can this be messy!).
What have I done wrong?? I am using Q needle, medium weight yarn, made 52 sc stitches, but my measurement is only 36″ and the repeat pattern 3 ½”. My stitches don’t appear too tight. I have not gone too far to start over, but I don’t know what to do unless I just make more stitches than the pattern calls for…
What’s your suggestion?
One more question. One of my yarns is 100% wool. Is this a BAD choice? I was trying to use what I have on hand and it is a perfect color, but would hate to regret it later. I appreciate any advice you have. I LOVE this pattern:)
Well first wool is normally not washable and I prefer a washable yarn for afghans since they will need to be washed often. That said, you can certainly make it with wool. I’m guessing that your yarn is sport weight wool which is much thinner than the yarn I used. You can add enough stitches to make it the width you like (the chain is the width of the blanket). Just be sure to and it on an even number so say instead of 52, you make need to do 92 (or after any repeat) because of the weight of your yarn.
I hope that helps and makes sense. It’s really easy to size it up and down since it has a clear repeat.
Good luck and let me know how it goes. I hope you’ll share your finished product with me too! 🙂
Hi Connie I’m new to crocheting and LOVE this !!! Do u have a video to watch ? I love your stuff 🙂
Making a video is on my list of things to do 🙂 One of these days! I haven’t even been able to crochet for almost two months…my needles are missing me! 🙂
I’m new to crochet and not quite sure how this gets the size of a twin throw with only chaining 53 ?
Thanks for explaining Rita.
Hey Rita, welcome to crochet! The reason 53 is enough is because the crochet hook is HUGE (Size Q Crochet Hook) and you’re using 3-strands of yarn TOGETHER. That’s what makes it so fast to make. 🙂
Did you seriously write “leave a tale…tie to the tail”… Twice??? LOL
Yikes! The beauty of “Copy/Paste” – one error repeated 🙂 Oh, and you missed one – I did it THREE times 🙂 Goodness, thanks for letting me know! Giggle
Very pretty have to make it
Thanks so much! I hope you’ll share a pic if you do!
I will try to do this. Thank you fo your help.
I have it going now what a beautiful pattern. Marilyn
We’ll I put color a and color b did the three strands of color 2 just don’t get row 6 7and 8 color a is blue color b is gray I now have ended at the three strands of color 2 the gray now on row 6 my other two colors are red and Ivory when do I add them in Marilyn
I am making your weekend afghan pattern I am confused what row to add the third and fourth color
The colors are changed out one by one….the first few rows are all one color…say color A. On the assigned row, drop ONE strand of color A and put one strand of color B in it’s place. You’re now working with 3 strands, 2 of color A and one of color B. On the next color change, drop another A strand and pick up a B – now you’re working with 3 strands, 2 color B and 1 color A. On the 3rd change, you drop the last color A and pick up another color B – now you’re working with 3 strands of B.
Make sense?
After not crocheting in many years I made a baby blanket for a dear friend and caught the bug to make more. Your afgan was my pick for my next project. Loved the color combo so ordered those in quanities given and there is NO way I’m going to get even a lap blanket out of that! What did I do wrong?
Hi Sharon,
Glad you’re crocheting again! Did you check the gauge for width? Is your hook a size Q? I it doesn’t measure correctly width-wise, you may have needed a larger hook. If you’ve gone too far to start over, you’re better off buying additional yarn and finishing it out with the hook you’re using now (unless of course it’s not wide enough). It finished as a large lap blanket for me (see the dimensions). If the width measures correctly it’s possible I goofed on the number of skeins. I keep the wrappers to count afterwards, I could have lots one. I hope not! Let me know.
Connie
Beautiful. .love the pattern and creative idea
Thanks so much for getting back to me! I’m lazy too, and hate the thought of taking the time to wind the yarn into balls too . . . stitching with yarn from both the outside and inside of the skein isn’t too bad, but with the tan color, it got all tangled . . . I’ll buy extra next time. Going to love this afghan!! 🙂
Oh, I hope you’ll share a photo! Have fun!
Hi, Connie . . . I don’t understand how to crochet with three strands of the same color when I only have two skeins of two of the yarns, as in the red and antique??
You can do it several ways – pull from the center of one skein and the outside (not the best and can cause tangles) or ball the skein into 3 balls. I generally just buy extra yarn and pull from the center and use the leftovers on another project just because I’m too lazy to wind the yarn into balls.
Im new to crocheting. Im not sure how to get starting using multiple strands..
could you explain further?
Hey Wendy – it’s easy. Just pull three skeins and work them as one strand. Here’s a video if you need more help: http://www.ehow.com/video_12273658_crochet-three-strands.html Good luck!
Hi! first of all, I’m in love with how this looks and am REALLY excited to try it out… I’m fairly new to crochet, and haven’t really done any projects that use different colors… I’m just trying to make absolute certain I understand what you’re saying here:
Drop ONE strand of color 1 and add one strand of color 2 leaving a tale long enough to tie to the tail you’ve clipped from color one
When you do this, do you cut one strand, and tie in your new color to the end you just cut?
Hi Katie, I’m thrilled you’re trying the throw. Here’s a tutorial on changing color – https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCcQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6979knxSLKM&ei=SWMwU-DlEo-FogToooDABg&usg=AFQjCNGTXBAgULEArEv-TRsx2L9yppxGKw&bvm=bv.62922401,d.cGU When you pull the new color in, do it with just the new strand. I pull through the new color, clip the old one about 6″, then tie the end of the new one to the old one while it’s still on the hook. I hope that makes sense.
Hi I am very new to crocheting and was wonder would it be possible to use your pattern using
Debbie Bliss cotton dk My daughter has picked three colours which I have bought but am very unsure of which pattern to us e and would like a simple one to do but still looks good
Thanks Janet
I’m not familiar with that brand, but you should be fine. You may need to change the size of your hook if the yarn isn’t as thick as 4-ply.
Connie, could you please publish the approximate MEASUREMENTS (length/width) of the finished throw? Thanks!
Sorry! I can never find a measuring tape. Rough measurements: 48″ wide by 51″ long – each repeat is about 6″
Hi Connie!
This afghan looks great! My question is how big is it when it is complete. I want to make one for my son’s bed that doesn’t take forever to do. Let me low and thanks for the pattern!
Judy
Hey Judy,
The width would be perfect, but you’ll need to add one more pattern repeat if you want to cover the bed totally. If you repeat the stripes in a uniform pattern (instead of random like I did), you should have enough yarn in each color to do that repeat. It would also look great in a single color or mix all the colors (I did that for the dog’s blanket – I’ll get a pic up soon).
