I was loaned a Lumia 1520 by AT&T to facilitate this review; all opinions are my own.
I was recently sent the Lumia 1520 to review. The Lumia 1520 is the first 6″ Phone from Nokia available from AT&T. Many refer to these large phones as Phablets. The Lumia 1520 is beast, compared to the HTC ONE, Galaxy S4, Moto X and even the Lumia 920 and 1020. The sheer size of the 1520 puts all other mainstream phones to shame. People’s reaction upon seeing the 1520, is both hilarious and puzzling! I’m frequently asked, “Does the phone fit in your pocket?” “Is it embarrassing carrying that huge thing around?” And “Can I compare the size to my phone?”
Does Size Matter?
The Lumia 1520 is very comfortable to handle. After a little practice, you can navigate the 6″ screen of the phone with just one hand. The 1520 is very light and thin. The phone, despite its size does fit in your pocket or just about anywhere. Personally, if I were embarrassed for carrying around a huge phone and holding a device that resembling a tablet to my head, I wouldn’t have survived the 80’s and 90’s! During those days, everyone carried around old style brick phones, and handheld consoles like the Gameboy. The 1520 and its 6″ screen allows for good gaming, movie viewing, and web browsing. So, if you are looking for a large screen phone with solid performance… You may just find what you are looking for with the Lumia 1520.
The Lumia 1520 comes standard with a lot of great improvements over the previous Lumia models. Standard is a 6″ display, and a whopping 20MP camera. The camera is more than any of the current mainstream smartphones and phablets. the Lumia 1520 also has a front camera to allow video playback at 1080p. A larger and longer lasting battery for even more talk, text, and movie time. The Lumia 1520 has access to AT&T’s LTE network. Now the phone offers Windows Phone 8 OS and 16GB of storage space.
Does the Lumia 1520 Fall Short?
Here is where I think the Lumia might fall a little short. Having just 16gb of storage means my growing number of game, apps, and music will eat up the space quickly. Once I synced my phone and installed my previously owned apps and music, the 16gb memory quickly filled up. Luckily the Lumia 1520 has expandable memory. Putting in extra storage space was a necessity. I’m hopeful later models will come standard with at least 32gb of memory, plus expandable storage. Lets face it, the longer we have smartphones and the ability to cloud synch our data, then we will need larger memory space to save everything. My other issue with the Lumia 1520 was the Windows Phone 8 OS itself. The OS itself is solid, easy to use and learn, plus allows for quick use of all functions. The main issue is the lack of customizability, that is standard with the Windows phone OS. The OS itself has not changed a lot since inception, the inability for custom text tones, and the lack of availability of popular Android and IOS apps in the Windows store leads to some frustration. Seriously, why isn’t Candy Crush available for Windows phones, huh???
The Lumia 1520 is a phone made to last. The single glossy outer body has two standard side buttons for volume and power, along with another for the camera. I took the Lumia 1520 for a field trip up to Steven’s. I unintentionally took it for some impact tests, as I skied my way down the trails falling every so often. Let me tell you, the phone took a nice beating, and came out flawless, with no issues. My Lumia 1520 continued to work like a charm, even in the cold. One added bit of customization I noticed is an increased in the number of tiles available on the main screen from four to six rows. This allows for more live tiles and shortcuts to my favorite apps.
Lumia 1520 App & Features
The Lumia 1520 comes with standard camera apps. Previously available for Nokia phones, The Lumia offers Nokia Cinemagraph, Creative Studio, Panorama, and a new app in beta, called Nokia Storyteller. This app allows you to add location, time stamps, and create collections for all the photos and videos. Then you can view them by activity or location later on. Lets hope they can finish quickly and make the app better and easier to use. Games, videos, movies, and music, all play incredible on the Lumia 1520. Halo and Angry Birds seem different but vibrant on the 6″ screen. Watching movies is less stressful on my eyes than with smaller screen sized phones. That is reason enough to consider purchasing the Lumia 1520. I took some photos showcasing the 1520 next to other smartphones and the Sony PSP. I wanted to put into perspective the big size of the Lumia 1520.
My Final Thoughts
Despite some minor complaints with the Lumia 1520, I really do like it! They aren’t major to make me shy me away from using my phone to the fullest. Watching movies, playing games, and texting are a lot more comfortable thanks to the bigger screen. Moving from an Android to a Windows Phone was made easy via the Transfer my Data app. I was able to quickly copy contacts from almost any phone to my Windows phone, using the Bluetooth function. If you are looking for a new easy to use phablet that reliable, then look no further than the Nokia Lumia 1520 available from AT&T now.
