This is a simple chevron pattern created in half double crochet (just because it’s my favorite stitch – but it can be done in single crochet or double crochet just as easily). I’m not a professional, just a hobby crocheter, so please let me know if you find a problem with this free crochet pattern.

Chevron Infinity Scarf Pattern

updated 11/8/14

Chain: 22

Row 1: In 3rd chain from hook hdc; hdc in each of the next 3 stitches,  3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a peak – increase), hdc in the next 4 stitches,  hdc3tog  in next three stitches (creates decrease* – valley), hdc in the next 4 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd peak – increase), hdc in the next 4 stitches, ch 2, turn.

Row 2:  (ch 2 counts as first hdc) hdc in each of the next 3 stitches,  3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a cluster), hdc in the next 4 stitches,  hdc3tog  in next three stitches (creates decrease*), hdc in the next 4 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd cluster),  hdc in the next 4 stitches (last hdc in the top of the chain 3 turn from below, turn.), ch 2, turn.

(My shorthand hdc hdc hdc hdc 3hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc3tog hdc hdc hdc hdc 3hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc ch 2, turn)

3hdc = peak hdc3tog = valley  so two peaks and one valley

Repeat row 2 changing colors at the start of any even row (you should always have a minimum of 2 rows of the same color). Rather than clipping your yarn, tie the new color on and carry the old color up. You’ll cover the carried yarn with the border. Repeat until you reach the desired length.

When you’ve reached your desired length, use a darning needle to sew the ends together making the scarf an infinity scarf. Then single crochet a border on both sides of the scarf in one of the colors. Evenly space the stitches and replicate the number of stitches on the 2nd side. Weave in ends.

*alternative decrease stitch – half double crochet decrease skipping the middle of the three stitches (less bulk and leaves a small hole – see on gray & white scarf below ).

Infinity Scarf Tips

Standard infinity scarves are about 21″ wide by 48″ long. If you’re using medium weight (4) go thinner and longer to account for the bulk.

If you’re making the scarf for a plus size woman or a tall man, please add an extra 5-9″ depending on height. Same for a short-necked person – a longer scarf gives him/her more styling options and makes it look less like the Michelin snowman.

I did a new color combo while on vacation. It’s also Bernat Waverly yarn but this time in Bahama Blue and Vanilla (one skein of each and just enough of the blue after edging because of the length I made it). I carried the yarn up the side when changing colors – if you clip at each color change, you’ll need two skeins of each to account for the extra yarn used (use this method if you’re not going to do the edging as in the sample above that’s mint and blue scarf above).
