This is a simple chevron pattern created in half double crochet (just because it’s my favorite stitch – but it can be done in single crochet or double crochet just as easily). I’m not a professional, just a hobby crocheter, so please let me know if you find a problem with this free crochet pattern.

Chevron Infinity Scarf Pattern
updated 11/8/14
Chain: 22
Row 1: In 3rd chain from hook hdc; hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a peak – increase), hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc3tog in next three stitches (creates decrease* – valley), hdc in the next 4 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd peak – increase), hdc in the next 4 stitches, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: (ch 2 counts as first hdc) hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a cluster), hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc3tog in next three stitches (creates decrease*), hdc in the next 4 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd cluster), hdc in the next 4 stitches (last hdc in the top of the chain 3 turn from below, turn.), ch 2, turn.
(My shorthand hdc hdc hdc hdc 3hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc3tog hdc hdc hdc hdc 3hdc hdc hdc hdc hdc ch 2, turn)
3hdc = peak hdc3tog = valley so two peaks and one valley
Repeat row 2 changing colors at the start of any even row (you should always have a minimum of 2 rows of the same color). Rather than clipping your yarn, tie the new color on and carry the old color up. You’ll cover the carried yarn with the border. Repeat until you reach the desired length.
When you’ve reached your desired length, use a darning needle to sew the ends together making the scarf an infinity scarf. Then single crochet a border on both sides of the scarf in one of the colors. Evenly space the stitches and replicate the number of stitches on the 2nd side. Weave in ends.
*alternative decrease stitch – half double crochet decrease skipping the middle of the three stitches (less bulk and leaves a small hole – see on gray & white scarf below ).
Infinity Scarf Tips
Standard infinity scarves are about 21″ wide by 48″ long. If you’re using medium weight (4) go thinner and longer to account for the bulk.
If you’re making the scarf for a plus size woman or a tall man, please add an extra 5-9″ depending on height. Same for a short-necked person – a longer scarf gives him/her more styling options and makes it look less like the Michelin snowman.
I did a new color combo while on vacation. It’s also Bernat Waverly yarn but this time in Bahama Blue and Vanilla (one skein of each and just enough of the blue after edging because of the length I made it). I carried the yarn up the side when changing colors – if you clip at each color change, you’ll need two skeins of each to account for the extra yarn used (use this method if you’re not going to do the edging as in the sample above that’s mint and blue scarf above).
I’m confused about the end of row two. I do the last 4 hdc but I have 2 stitches left over. Am I supposed to chain 2 from there and ignore the excess or did I do something wrong?
It sounds like you started in the wrong stitch. Make sure you’re going into the first stitch and not the base of the chain at the beginning of the row.
Connie, thank you for your share of the chevron design – you did a good job with it!
Don’t be discourage with making designs, practice will take you to perfection.

Thank you! What a sweet comment. I have been fooling around with some crochet in the past month and will post it soon. My goal is to start making time for it everyday. Thanks again!
Hi i enjoyed making this scarf, I really like it!!! Would you happen to have a beanie pattern to go with it? I’d really appreciate it! Thank you! 🙂
Sorry, no. But that’s a good idea.
So after I finish the row2 and start row 1 again should i begin with chain stiches or just begin with makeing a hdc into the 3rd chain stich. #veryconfusing.
I made some changes to the way the pattern is written. Take a look and see if that helps. Sorry about that! You do need 2 chain stitches – some people do them at the end of the row and then turn. I guess I’m weird. I turn and then chain. Either way you do it, the chain 2 is the first stitch in the next row.
Hi! When I get to the 2nd row and reach this part”-4hdc (last hdc in the top of the chain 3 turn from below, turn” – what does this mean? I end up with 4 stitches left over from row1.
I’ve rewritten the pattern to hopefully clarify the instructions. Take a look and see if that works for you – the top of the chain 3 below should read chain 2 below and it’s not necessary for this pattern (in some it’s to make a straight edge)
I’m just about to start, but I am confused about repeating row 1 … ‘in third chain from hook hdc..’ Do you mean in the third stitch from hook?
Oooops, yes. 🙂
I just made this beautiful scarf but somehow I had 23 sts. Maybe i goofed. But when you say 4 hdc do you mean in the next 4 sts? I was alittle confused. Even when you count them like that its 23 sts. Right? Thank you just the same. I love the pattern.
How do you do the hdc3tog stitch? Thanks!
Do i repeat row two and three or just three?
Sorry, I updated the pattern so it makes more sense:
Chain: 22
Row 1: In 3rd chain from hook hdc; hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a cluster), 4 hdc, hdc3tog in next three stitches (creates decrease*), 4 hdc, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd cluster), 4hdc, turn.
Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as your first stitch – be sure you’re going into the 2nd stitch for your first hdc). hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a cluster), 4 hdc, hdc3tog in next three stitches (creates decrease*), 4 hdc, 3 hdc in the same stitch (creates a 2nd cluster), 4hdc (last hdc in the top of the chain 3 turn from below, turn.)
Repeat rows 1 & 2 changing colors at the start of any even row (you should always have a minimum of 2 rows of the same color). Rather than clipping your yarn, tie the new color one and carry the old color up. You’ll cover the carried yarn with the border. Repeat until desired length.
Thanks for letting me know!
Hi Connie,
Beautiful scarf but my stitches just aren’t coming out right, I’m short 3 stitches. This is what I’m getting:
Begin 22 – 3 (3rd chain from hook)= 19
19 – 3 hdc = 16
16 – 3 chains for 1hdc3tog = 13
13 – 4 hdc=9
9 – 1 (3 hdc in one stitch) = 8
8 – 4 hdc = 4
4- 3 hdc = 1
Then you say 4hdc
I’m not normally so obnoxious but I have tried chevron stitches dozens of times and never ever can get it to come out right and thought this was perfect to practice with and now I don’t know if it’s just me, destined to never get to make a blanket or scarf in a stitch that everyone is so easy. 🙁 Could you help?
You’re probably starting in the wrong stitch. I have the hardest time with Chevron’s as well, and where you start is important. If you’re short three, you’re likely not starting in the first hdc. 4 hdc at the end of the row is correct because at the beginning, the chain 3 counts as the first hdc combined with the other 3 and that’s 4 hdc on that end too. Make sense?
I find that if I follow the pattern my chevrons don’t add up (the points and dips)
So I have to go 5 or six stitches sometimes to get to the middle of the point before doing decrease or increase..
Mathematically this makes sense to me.. Since I’m adding in 2 stitches and then taking them back away.. When I do the next row I have to account for those added stitches in the peaks and dips.
Does this make sense?
I did add extra chains to make the scarf wider as I want to leave it as a long scarf instead of infinity.. But I honestly just seem to have to wing it.. If I follow the pattern it ends up not pointed enough for me and is more like small waves or something…
Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
I added enough extra chains to make one more dip in the pattern and I am accounting for that at the beginning and end of the rows
Well….first it is a small waves pattern, that was by design. If you want something with a deeper ripple, you’ll need need to go with a different design. Here’s one that might work for you: http://www.nationalww2museum.org/learn/knit-your-bit/scarf-pattern-4-crochet.pdf
As for it counting wrong, the most common place to make an error is in the first and last stitches. If you start one stitch from where you think you should start and “skip” where you think the last one should go and put it in the chain 2 from the row before, the count will be right and your sides will be straight. Here’s a tutorial (different stitch but where you put the stitch is the same – scroll down for the close-up view of where the last stitch goes – http://myrosevalley.blogspot.com/2013/06/crochet-basics-how-to-crochet-straight.html)
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help.
Hi! Love your chevron scarf pattern. I want to make one with 3 colors similar to the blue, green and grey in the big picture. Is the pattern 4 rows blue, 2 green, 4 blue, then 10 grey?
Thank you!
You can change colors in any pattern, but make them even. For example 2 red, 2 yellow, 24 green, 6 red, 8 pink….etc. As long as you do them in even rows it will be perfect and your own unique creation! I hope you’ll share a pic when it’s done!
I haven’t tried the pattern yet but I can’t wait to get some yarn! What did mean by carrying the yarn up the side when changing colors?
Instead of clipping and tying off the yarn, carry it up to the next row and continue working with it.
Hello!
I really love this pattern but I am running into trouble. It appears that for Row 2 there are not enough stitches to do what the pattern requires. I’m always one stitch short but if I chain 23 then I have too many stitches once I get further into the pattern. Could you tell me what I am doing wrong? I’d love to make this scarf! Thank you!
There are two possibilities – the first that you’re not going into the right first stitch or the opposite, you’re not going into the right last stitch. It sounds like it’s at the beginning. Check that there’s a mate for every stitch from the first row and you should see where the missing one is – but it’ll likely be the first or last stitch. Let me know if that works for you. I tested the pattern three times so I’m pretty sure it’s right.
Hey, I love the look of this scarf, I have become obsessed with the Chevron pattern.
I was having problems with the directions and I had to repeat the first 2 and 3 rows about 3 times because it wasn’t adding up.
The beginning should be CHAIN 24…
I chained 24 this last time and now it’s perfect!
Thanks! 🙂
I need to do a video 🙂 I originally had 24 and too many people found it wrong so I redid it. It’s all in how the stitches are started and ended. I “skip” one at each end, other’s don’t. I’m so glad you were able to get the pattern to work for you. You can see I’m a bit obsessed with them too. 🙂 Thanks so much!
I love this and it looks just easy enough for my poor crochet skills too. Thank you 🙂
Hi Connie,
I have tried your pattern a couple of times this afternoon and each time I end up with extra stitches (i.e., when I’m doing the last 4 hdc’s I have five available stitches in which to put them.) I can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I think it might be how I start each row? Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks!
Julie
Hey Julie – if you’re putting the last HDC into the top of the chain 3 from the row before, you technically skip the one before it – it’s my preferred method as it makes for a perfect edge. So 3HDS, skip one stitch, and last HDC in the top of the chain 3 turn. Make sense?
Yes – thank you! Thanks for sharing this pattern!
I’m so glad it’s working for you. I made another one while I was on vacation – teal and vanilla. I’ll post pics soon.
Thanks Connie for the pattern! Love the W&G chevron. I think I have a new weekend project 🙂
Hi, Connie! This post makes me wish I could manage learn to crochet! All of my friends who do are lefties, while I’m right handed, and I can’t seem to follow diagrams. Such a beautiful scarf, I really love chevron.
Stopping by to say hello. I’m a member of your SITS girls tribe this week. Such a wonderful blog, lots of really interesting information!!
Those darn lefties! 🙂 Check out YouTube. There are tons of free videos for us righties.
Hi Kristyn,
I am new to crochet (literally a 2 week newbie) and I’m LH. My RH coworker taught me to crochet. I then went crazy googling easy instructional videos. I found Crochet Guru on youtube who is a girl who can crochet with both hands! I am telling you she has the easiest videos. I think I am intermediate now from her videos. Give it a try!
Hope that helps you. I have found tons of boards on pinterest too with easy instructions for RH and LH.
is it possible to print this pattern? I want to give it to my sister and friend and don’t know how to print it for them. Help!!
How can I print this pattern? I don’t crochet but my sister and best friend do and I’d like one of them to make this for me? I don’t see a print option anywhere and I don’t want all of the ads, etc. Just the pattern. Please help!!
Sorry, I don’t have a way but will work on it as soon as I return from vacation.
Hello,
I love this pattern but do NOT understand the second decrease method. Please HELP! I do not want the bulk.
Thanks,
Z
I don’t either!! I think I need to see a video of it-we will anxiously await the posting of the video!!
For row 2… Following instructions exactly leaves me with extra stitches before the turn? Is there a piece that’s supposed to be repeated?
Sorry, Row 3.
I made some clarifications to the pattern – see if that helps. It turns out I did it differently on the two scarves. I’ll try to do a video when I get bac from the press trip I’m going on tomorrow.
what does HDC mean? I am just starting out and have finished my first two scarfs, so im still learning!
Half Double Crochet – sorry about that! I’ll add a link to a video to help you out. It’s the best stitch ever. 🙂
I commented too soon–just tried it again and it’s fine! Thank you!
When you chain 24, you do end up with an extra chain before turning to start the first row. How can I get this to come out right? (I’m a beginner). I tried ignoring that extra chain, but then the first row doesn’t line up correctly. Thanks for any advice!
I’m so glad you figured it out! I made a second one. I’ll post pics tomorrow. I hope you’ll share yours when it’s done!
I love the scarf. I’m going to pass it onto my niece because she loves to crochet.
Thanks so much for passing on the pattern!
Hi Connie
I’m having problem I end up with 2 stitch in the end if I chain 24 . I real like this pattern ,but can’t make it come out ? Thank you for your time
Jeannie
I made one clarification – but I think I know where those “extra” two stitches are coming from. I’ll do a single row sample and post it tomorrow but the gist of it is that when you turn, chain 2…..the NEXT stitch is in the 2nd stitch and the end of the row, you skip one and do the last stitch in the top of the chain 2 from below so you have a straight edge.
Sorry I wasn’t clear and I’ll have it fixed up asap.
Definitely intrigued with this pattern, thank you for sharing. My boys could use something that works better and the infinity may be a great option. Of course, I really want to work on mittens since my last attempt was a bust.
I haven’t tried mittens yet. I’m working on a new Chevron scarf for myself in mint and gray – smaller chevrons and more variation in their sizes. I hope to have it done by my trip on Jan 16 but too much work means no time for crochet 🙁
I love this! Im still just a beginner with crochet, but Im going to pin this to make whenever I get a little better with crocheting!
It’s not a hard pattern, promise! I’m an intermediate crocheter – I find that I like patterns like this I can just sit and crochet without having to check a pattern every few minutes. GOod luck and let me know if you need help.
