I received a Hammacher Schlemmer Toaster Oven to facilitate my Gifts for Mom story; all opinions are my own.
I am probably not your normal mom. I don’t want bath and body products or jewelry for Christmas. I want a gift that’s going to save me time, money, or energy and something that makes my everyday life easier.
Maybe it’s because I’m older, but I think that gifts from the heart mean thinking about how I can help someone live better and I appreciate when my family does the same for me. So when I got the chance to pick something from the Hammacher Schlemmer online gift guide to feature as the best gift for mom, I spent hours pouring over the possibilities.

There are so many options to choose from including jewelry and bath and body products, but what caught my eye was something I’ve wanted for years! A toaster oven! Now I know it seems silly, but my husband is a firefighter and for all these years he’s said I can’t have one because I’d burn myself or burn the house down.
While I am a klutz in the kitchen, I have faith in Hammacher Schlemmer to have picked out the perfect toaster oven to sell. In fact, they’re so sure about it they dubbed it “The Best Toaster Oven.” So I took my chances and ordered it.
What arrived was a well packaged kitchen appliance that I fell in love with immediately. Since I’m giving up a good portion of very limited counter space, I expected a lot from this new kitchen appliance. And did I get all that I wanted and more? Yes!
This compact little toaster oven made by Breville bakes, broils, toasts and more. It has so many features but they’re all easy to use and easy to set up. It’s my go-to cooking appliance now and if I had my way, it’d replace the microwave oven (I believe microwaves are dangerous – the hubby doesn’t). Now we have dueling appliances! I’ve used mine to roast my vegetarian Thanksgiving Tofurky, to crisp pizza, to bake fake bacon, and more.
It cleans easily with a pull out and rinse off tray so I don’t have to worry about a build up of crumbs that would attract ants during ant season – my toaster always did because we couldn’t see when crumbs were in it. Yuck! It’s also easy to pull out and clean should something boil over or spill.
I love the drop down door design and when the rack is in the middle set of runners, it pulls out automatically. The shelf can be raised or lowered to fit other pans or to change to broil.
The one downfall of the Breville Toaster Oven is that it gets HOT on the outside. So hot you can’t have anything near it. I store the pans that came with it (a 2-piece broiler pan and round pizza pan) vertically next to it between it and the refrigerator to protect it from heat on that side. On the other side is the stove.
It was hard remembering not to set anything on top of it so I ordered a cutting board with silicone feet (from another retailer) that Breville sells for this purpose (it should come with it – it’s far too dangerous without it) for about $50.
So did I burn down the house? Nope. But yes, I burned myself the second time I used it and the hubby couldn’t help himself but say, “I told you so!” The Breville Toaster Oven gets up to 500 degrees inside so treat it like the oven it is and wear oven mitts or other protective devices.
