I don’t know when I saw “Mary Poppins” for the first time. It wasn’t likely during the original release, though I was 2 at the time. We didn’t have a lot of money and if our parents did take us to the movies, it was usually the drive-in. I was never a match for the late night movies and mostly slept through them.
I don’t think it’s been played on TV so it’s highly likely I didn’t see it until the 80’s when it was released on VHS. I know I bought it then for my kids and I remember vividly watching it with them. We had so much fun singing along. I’m sure my oldest son’s love of singing was fostered by watching Disney movies as a child and “Marry Poppins” was one of his favorites. Both boys loves the animated penguin scenes and giggled and laughed as they danced – the memory is such a fond one that I admit, I tear up thinking about my two tiny boys who are now men. But though they’re men, they still love Disney movies – it’s something we still share as a family.
We’ve seen the film many times since and we own it on every format. Now that it’s being released for the first time on Blu-ray and you can be sure I have a copy! Not just because it’s a Disney classic, but because the story is so sweet and has such a great message.
I love the friendship between Bert and Mary and the relationship she has with the children. I appreciate how Mary helps the family to become closer and stronger in a positive way. I even like the subplots of women’s suffrage and the changing roles for women in family. But mostly I love the music.
A new generation will be discovering the magic of “Mary Poppins” this holiday season. The 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack hits the streets on December 10, 2013. Disney took the time to restore the film and digitalize it so it looks and sounds fabulous. Plus they added some fun extras like a sing-a-long and some featurettes that are sure to please the most ardent Disney lover.

And the more the glee
