Arby’s: NEW Smokehouse Brisket (video)

I’ll admit I have a fondness for Arby’s restaurants because 33 years ago my husband and I had our first date at one. Back then I ate meat and I still remember I ordered a Jr Roast Beef on the night that would change my life.

Times have change and even though I’m a vegetarian now I still eat at Arby’s because it’s one of the only fast food restaurants I can get a healthy lunch. So what do I order? A Market Fresh Roast Beef and Swiss sandwich with no onion and the roast beef on the side. My dogs are happy and so am I – it’s amazing!

But my hubby is a meat-eater and he likes to try every new sandwich they come out with. Today he’s on duty at the Fire Station so since this is our wedding anniversary month (number 30), I thought I’d surprise him with lunch from “our place” so I stopped at Arby’s and picked up the usual for me and for him Arby’s Smokehouse Brisket sandwich.

This new sandwich is made with slow smoked brisket (13 hours of smoking!), a thick slice of smoked Gouda cheese, a slathering of their Smoky Q Sauce (BBQ sauce), bacon, and crispy fried onions, all encased in a start cut bun.

So how’d he like it? He LOVED it. The brisket was tender and juicy, but there was a lot of fat on it which he removed. He also pulled off the onions, he has an ulcer and so he avoids them. The Gouda cheese with its smoky flavor was a huge hit as was the toasted bun.

Arby’s Smokehouse Brisket will be an occasional treat. With over 600 calories and lots of cholesterol and sodium, it’s not something he’ll partake in very often. Next time I’ll order it without the onions and mayo which will also save calories and fat.

Are you an Arby’s fan too? Visit your local Arby’s (not sure where one is near you? Find an Arby’s) and try out the Smokehouse Brisket sandwich – do it soon though it’s only available for a limited time. When you do, let me know what you think!
