Top Restaurants in Carmel - mundaka Spanish Style Tapas

On our recent trip to Carmel we dined at mundaka, a Spanish style tapas restaurant. The interior is suitably dark for a romantic dinner for two, with color changing lights along the walls and tables large enough to share several tapas at once. The light fixtures are beautiful, reminiscent of stained glass.

We were seated in a corner booth with lots of pillows for comfort. We enjoyed many different tapas, but a few stood out. Our favorite was the Datiles, which are bacon wrapped dates filled with goat cheese and a crunchy almond. They were a perfect blend of sweet, savory, chewy, and crunchy, we should have gotten a second plate, there were that good!

Another standout was the Hamburguesa, a small lamb burger with pickled cauliflower served with truffle fries. While I thought the burger was awesome, my date was all about the truffle fries – they were gone very quickly! I also loved the Pato, delicious smoky, rich duck with crispy skin that melts in your mouth. We also enjoyed the Coliflor, which was an interesting cauliflower gratin made with Gruyere cheese.

Top Restaurants in Carmel

What puts mundaka on our top restaurants in Carmel list is their philosophy on food. They use fresh, local, organic, biodynamic, free-range, line-caught, sustainable, fair-trade, ingredients in their homemade, from scratch, meals. They never use any product that has been raised with antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides, and they refuse to use anything with high fructose corn syrup, artificial color, or artificial flavors as ingredients – that’s admirable!

Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food being served. Prices range from $8.50 for the Datilies to $14.50 for the Pato and servings were generous.

Unfortunately there was one low point for us, and that was the Flan. It was supposed to be orange flavored, but we failed to taste even a hint – we weren’t able to finish it due to its blandness. Despite that little set back I wholeheartedly recommend mundaka; we had a wonderful time and the food was outstanding.
