Fellowes Powershred 73C1 Paper Shredder ReviewCall me weird. But I get giddy over good office products and with tax season finally behind us thanks to an appointment with our new tax person on Saturday, it’s time to start clearing out the old and making room for the new. This year I’m going to have a little help in that department. I recently received a the Fellowes Powershred 73Ci 100% Jam Proof 12-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (4601001).

Technology Review: Are All Shredders the Same?

What?!? You scoff that all shredders are the same? That couldn’t be further form the truth. Trust me, I’ve had shredders that cost $29 and commercial ones in the thousands back when I worked for a city (they take shredding seriously!) and I can tell you, that there is a huge difference in the capabilities and qualities of shredders and yes, you generally get what you pay for. But if you buy a quality shredder it will not only help you protect your sensitive information, it’ll last for years.

My Fellows Paper Shredder takes on 3' of old tax records in minutes!

So what will I be shredding? Thousands of customer’s orders that include their name, address, phone numbers….plus all of our old bank and credit card statements, and a plethora of junk mail that arrives with our name, address, phone number, etc. Pretty much anything that if taken from the trash could help some thief steal from us or become us. Of course, check with your tax preparer so you know your disposal schedule. We have two small business so when and what we shred for them is different than our personal files.

Technology Review: Fellowes Powershred 73Ci

But what makes the Fellowes Powershred 73Ci so special and worthy of a spot in our office? First the convenience of it. The pull out bin is genius – if you’ve ever had a model (like our old one) where you had to lift off the shredder head to get to the paper debris, you’ll know why this is such a fabulous feature. It also means that emptying it is easier so it’s more likely to be done before the bin fills and the shreds have no place to go and they get jammed back up into the shredder. There’s also a viewing area in the bin so you can see visually when it’s time to empty it.

But where the Fellowes Powershred 73Ci really stands out is its “exclusive state-of-the-art and proprietary technologies” which include a 100% Jam Proof System, SafeSense Technology and an Energy Savings System. But what does all this mean? It means that the shredder is smarter than me. It automatically stops if I do something stupid like try to pull a piece of paper out of it meaning it keeps me from shredding my fingers. It also works to optimize the power savings both while running and in standby.

Shredding my Debit Card after it was fraudulently used

It’s provides one of the safest shreds, a cross-cut, that can take a single sheet of 8-1/2 x 11” paper and turn it into 397 tiny pieces which are nearly impossible to put back together again. It goes through staples and tape like a champ. Sure, I should take the time to find them and remove them before shredding, but that’s never, ever, gonna happen. It also chopped up my recently compromised debit card in seconds.

In fact, it chewed up my entire pile of old tax records in about 5 minutes with two bin dumps…it’s that fast. Think of what it will do with our daily junkmail feeding! But is it truly jam proof? Well, sort of. You can put too much in it, and it can jam, but it’s so freakin’ smart that it stops, backs itself up, and then resets itself and starts shredding again. It also warns you if you’re stuffing too much in it with the LED lights. It’s pretty brilliant.
