AC-14100H Portable Air Conditioner from NewAir

I live near Seattle and while we rarely get the high temps much of the US experiences during summer; however, there are some days in the 80’s and 90’s. It’s during those days that the reality of not having air-conditioning smacks you right upside your sweating forehead. You can only go to the mall or movie theater for so long. You eventually have to come back home to your sweatbox.

So a few years ago we bought a portable air conditioner. Not the kind that sits in the window – we never felt those were safe. Our theory was confirmed when our nextdoor neighbor’s home was robbed in broad daylight last year by a trio of crooks who hoisted each other up to the 2nd floor window and pushed the unit in. It was then that we were grateful for our portable unit that  we vent through our cat door which is built into the wall. It’s just large enough for the vent to go out and no human to come in.

The only problem with the portable air conditioner is that we’re stuck in whatever room it’s in. Several times we’ve made a bed in the living room and camped out there during a hot streak. That’s because it weighs close to a hundred pounds and takes two people to carry it up the stairs.

We realized that we’re way too old to be sleeping on the living room floor and it was time to get a second portable unit for the upstairs. Since we have nowhere to store it up here, we knew it’d be one more thing in the garage to haul in and out seasonally. That is until we discovered the AC-14100H Portable Air Conditioner from NewAir. What makes this one so special is that it has a heating element as well as air filtering, so it could stay out and in use year-round!

Air Conditioner/Heater = Year Round Comfort

NewAir’s Portable Air Conditioner/Heater will cool up to 525 sq ft, perfect for our master bedroom and bath. We vent it out of our bedroom window which has been fitted with a security device that makes it impossible to open the window any further than the 8” required for the window kit to provide the venting.  To get optimum cooling, the hose should be as short as possible and without kinks, this will also mean less heat buildup from the exhaust, so plan on using the unit within 14″ of your window. To help any air conditioner work better, keep all windows and doors closed and close the curtains.

NewAir AC-14100H 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

This is the perfect 4-season heater/air conditioner and I love that it replaces four other machines – fan, air-conditioned, dehumidifier, and heater. My only complaint is draining the unit. My previous portable air conditioner has a tube which goes into a pan in the side of the unit. When it’s full, the unit turns off, I pull it out, dump it, and return it. In the NewAir AC-14100H heating and cooling unit, there’s a plug on the back that drains into a small pan requiring multiple trips to empty.  That’s the only drawback I’ve found so far.

 NewAir AC-14100H Features

Some of my favorite feature are the sleep mode (available during cooling or heating modes) and timer and I love the remote control. The unit is super simple to operate and maintain – just choose your desired room temperature and it’ll turn the compressor on and off to achieve it. The control panel on the top of the unit is easy to understand and shows you exactly which features you have selected. I also love that it has a charcoal filter, easily replaceable, to filter the air.

About the Noise

Is the NewAir AC-14100H noisy? No more so than my previous unit. Let’s face it, air conditioners are noisy. I can hear my neighbor’s running in her window from two houses down. But in the fan-only mode it’s as quiet as a box fan and during cooling, the sound is just a slight annoyance for the wonderful cooling it provides.
