We’re about to have another gun owner in our house. I can’t tell you how much these words feel foreign to me, I’m so not a gun person and yet those around me are. No matter where one stands on gun laws, I think we can all agree that if you’re going to own a gun, you need to keep it out of the reach of children and that brings up the conversation about gun safes.
The balancing act between having a gun at hand in case of an emergency needs to be carefully considered when kids are in the house. While we had guns when the kids were growing up, neither of them knew much about them, and they certainly didn’t know where we kept them or the trigger lock keys. Our guns were dismantled and kept in separate locations. When my oldest showed an interest in hunting, my husband took him to a class to become certified before he was allowed to touch the gun. Still, if I had to do it over, we’d purchase a gun safe.
Gun Safes, Trigger Locks, and More
I didn’t even realize how many guns we owned until a few years ago. For me they’re out of sight, out of mind, but with a hunter in the family it turns out we had a few. Now my son will be carrying a gun for work so we’ll be adding one more gun to our home and I’ll admit, it makes me a little nervous. Who knew that when my son went to school to study wildlife that he’d be away at boot camp learning handcuffing and gun tactics – I know I sure didn’t sign up for this! But I also know that they’re training him that safety comes first and for that I’m eternally grateful. We’ll be working with our son on where it will be stored while he’s living here for our own safety and peace of mind. Thankfully gun safes come in all sizes and we’ll likely convince him to purchase a wall mounted pistol safe for easy access. They’re not all huge bank vault looking things anymore.
Please, if you have a gun, don’t just hide it. Lock it up. Gun safes, trigger locks, and more. Whatever it takes to be sure an innocent child is harmed.
