Disney - Babes In Toyland on Blu-RayIt’s a hit to the system to see something re-released and “restored” when it was released the year you were born. Talk about feeling old! But that’s the case for me with Disney’s release of Babes in Toyland which was just released for the first time ever on Disney Blu-ray™! I can’t believe it’s been over 50 years since Annette Funicello stared in this holiday musical classic. Even better, it was produced by Walt Disney himself, so we see it how he wanted it to be presented.

About the Film

In this film, Tom the Piper’s Son is set to marry Mary Quite Contrary. But on the eve of their wedding, the evil miser, Barnaby, hires two henchmen to do away with Tom and then steal Mary’s sheep. The sheep are looked after by Little Bo Peep. Barnaby’s plan is to deprive Mary of her livelihood, thus forcing her to marry Barnaby.

But Barnaby’s plans are thwarted when his henchmen double-cross him and instead of killing Tom, they sell him to a band of gypsies. He escapes and works to make his way with Mary, Bo-Peep, and other Mother Goose characters to Toyland.

The Cast

The cast includes Ray Bolger, best known for his role as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz as Barnaby; Annette Funicello (TV’s “The Mickey Mouse Club,” Beach Party) as Mary Contrary; Tommy Sands (The Longest Day) as Tom Piper; Ed Wynn (Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins) as Toymaker. Directored by Jack Donohue (TV’s “Chico and the Man”).

What We Thought

While the film has been remastered, it’s still a 1960’s film. It’s a bit cheesy and the props and settings are primitive, but the songs are fun. Also, even though the story includes kidnapping and deceit, it’s done in the genre of fairy tales, so it’s not as disturbing.
