I think one way we can teach kids compassion is to share with them how people in other countries live. We take so much for granted here. We believe we have the right to clean water, an education, and sanitation. But for most of the world, those basic human rights are not something they enjoy.

World Vision Catalog 2012

The holidays are a great time to bring the lesson home by allowing your children to make a charitable donation or by allowing them to help decide where the family’s charity giving will go. According to the Chronical of Philanthropy, nearly 60% of American say they’ll give to the charity of their choice between Thanksgiving and Christmas and that’s why there are so many great ways to give during this season. Of course it’s also because tax time is looming and end of the year deductions are due.

But whatever the reason for giving, it’s sometimes hard to decide who to give to; there are so many worthy causes. Plus, I want the maximum benefit for my gift.

I’ve recently checked out the new World Vision Gift Catalog. What I love about the catalog is it allows me to pick my focus. For example, the Clean Water Fund allows me to give the gift of clean water to a village. Or I can give hope for sexually exploited girls or provide a business load for a woman.

I can make direct gifts or purchase items that benefit the fund. These include items like a  beautiful Artisan Beaded Necklaces. This glass-bead necklace is handmade in Thailand and the sale benefits children and families worldwide.

Give a Goat to a family in needBut what will I be giving this year? I found out from my son’s fiancé that he dreams of having acreage someday and he wants goats. This was news to me and I couldn’t help but giggle just a bit at the thought. And then I turned the page in the catalog and I found the perfect gift.

Gertie Goat is a sweet little plush animal that sells for $25. She represents the farm animals that are given to children and families around the world through the fund. But to make it even bigger impact, I’m donating a goat in his name. That goat will feed a starving child somewhere in the world. I think my son will love it!

You can donate chickens, pigs, cows, and more. What a wonderful program to provide a way for a family to become more self-reliant.

Visit the World Vision Catalog and see how you and your family can impact the world this holiday season and I’m a little bit hopeful that there’s another goat or two added to the fold.
