Before (1988) and During Master Bedroom Makeover (2012)

Before (1988) and During Master Bedroom Makeover (2012)

We’ve been working slowly on our master bedroom make-over. With my husband sent off on so many wildfire deployments this last summer, it fell to the wayside. But now that rain and cooler weather have descended on us, it’s time to pick the project back up again. We’ve gotten so much done. The wallpaper is down, the floor is in, everything is painted, the bed was purchased and set up, and the pet stairs made and finished.

When we redesigned the layout of our bedroom we knew we’d have to give up our old bedside tables because they wouldn’t fit the new space. Giving them up meant having a better view out the window and more light in the room. So changing to smaller tables was an easy choice. Still, I work on a laptop from bed several hours every day, so losing that storage place wasn’t easy.

To solve some of the dilemma we decided to forego table lamps and go with wall mounted swing lamps. They work fine, but I have a hard time finding the cord when I want to turn it on. I figured there must be a better way so I went online to search for something to make these lamps work, or to find something to replace them.

I ended up on Capitol Lighting’s 1-800lighting.com website. They carry a lot of different kinds of lamps including Corbett Lighting, Hinkley Lighting, Fine Art Lamps, Hubbardton Forge, Schonbek, Quoizel, Hudson Valley Lighting, Murray Feiss, and lots more (visit their brand directory for the full list). I wandered off into the ceiling fan “aisle” of the online store and for a minute I wished we’d purchased a new one instead of doing the makeover on our existing one (read: Home DIY: Ceiling Fan Makeover and Updating including Paint Tips).

I also peeked at the chandeliers which are so my style, but not the hubby’s. A girl can window shop, right?!? If only they made a ceiling fan with crystals! There are so many to choose from, it’s almost overwhelming. They have indoor and outdoor – some day I’d love to live somewhere where you need an outdoor fan!

I also said I’d NEVER consider a pendant lamp for any location in my home. I’m a child of the 60’s, I’ve already lived through this fad once and I didn’t like it then. But I truly fell in love with the Quoizel DW2817 Downtown 17 Inch Ceiling Pendant and if we didn’t need a fan I’d certainly consider this one. It’d also be amazing in a dinning room but we replaced ours last year – darn it! Why do I always seem to find the perfect thing, at the perfect price, AFTER I’ve already settled for something else?!?

I did also spend a little time Capitol Lighting’s sale section and I’ve almost talked myself into a bathroom towel rack in the same finish we did the fan in and it’s marked down $79! But I forced myself to think about it overnight because we’re nowhere near ready to start on the bathroom! But now I know that they carry home décor and bathroom items as well and so I’ve bookmarked the site to come back to when the time is right.

So what did I do about the lamps? We considered a wall sconce, but realized that for our location we need to be able to swing the light out of the way of closet doors on either side of the bed, so the swing arm lamp would be the best style for our use. We found several we loved, including the Kenroy Home 21395ORB (above). They’re a much nicer version of the ones we bought locally, but I decided to stay with the ones we’ve already purchased because my husband just got them up about a month ago. But I’m adding a kit that turns my lamp into a touch lamp. That will tide me over until we’re further into the decorating part of the makeover and I can make a final decision and approach the hubby to mount new ones. I’ve bookmarked the site to come back to  when it’s time.
