“I’ll be your candle on the water. This flame inside of me will grow. Keep holding on you’ll make it. Here’s my hand so take it.” – Pete’s Dragon
One of my favorite Disney characters is Elliott, the invisible dragon and best friend to Peter from the 1977 Pete’s Dragon. It’s being released for the first time on Blu-ray in celebration of its 35th anniversary! This is a family-friendly film that’s all about love, friendship, and caring.
The film stars Mickey Rooney (Night at the Museum), Helen Reddy (a hugely popular 70’s singer and songwriter), Sean Marshall (The New Adventures of Heidi), Red Buttons (The Longest Day), and Jim Dale (Pushing Daisies). It was directed by Don Chaffey best known for 1970’s TV icons “Chips,” and “Charlie’s Angels.”
“Look for me reaching out to show. As sure as rivers flow. I’ll never let you go.” – Pete’s Dragon
Pete’s Dragon is a mixture of delightful animation and live action and tells the story of Pete, played by Marshall) who’s orphaned. He finds a friend the invisible dragon named Elliot whom only Pete is able to see. Of course, the turn-of-the-century townspeople are hard pressed to believe the small boy and they believe he’s a bit daft.
Pete finds a family to truly call his own with Lampie (Rooney) and Nora (Reddy) a father and daughter who’ve moved to the town to care for the lighthouse. There are plenty of beautiful songs in the film and a great heartwarming story. It’s one of Disney’s quieter films but it’s truly special.
This is truly a classic kids’ movie that relies on storytelling and not on snarky comebacks and attitudes. It’s a refreshing change from a lot of the “kid” films out today. It’s definitely on my list of movies to share with my future grand kids.
