I would like to start this post off by saying that Connie is our token vegetarian around here – the rest of us are meat eaters and that includes me. I don’t follow vegetarian or vegan diets in any way whatsoever. When I was offered a chance to review Kathy Freston’s New York Times bestselling book, The Lean, plus a bag full of her favorite vegan items to help me go vegan, I decided to give them a try. I’m not easily persuaded away from my meat-loving ways; but I was surprised at the variety of vegan options available to consumers.

I’ve always been a fan of Cilf Bars and Bobo’s Oat Bars but the others were completely new to me. Also I didn’t realize that Clif Bars were Vegan!
The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss is an easy read for anyone who is looking for a Vegan diet plan. The book has an easy intro and day-by-day assistance to have you eating fully Vegan within 30-days. There are tips and tricks to help you stay focused on your goals as well as some tasty sounding recipes. It seems easy enough with small changes made every day. I’m going to be 100% honest and say that I like the idea behind Freston’s model, but I’m still a meat eater. That being said I understand and I appreciate healthy eating, so I can say it’s a good read.
We had a tasting party at my sister’s house where indulged in the Dark Cacao Raw Truffles – they’re good but I’m more of a milk chocolate fan (granted there’s a health value to dark chocolate that’s lacking in milk chocolate which is mostly fat and sugar). We also taste tested the Clif Bar – my sister absolutely loved the Almond Protein Clif Bar and she assured me she will be enjoying them again in the near future. We also tried the Peanut Butter Oat Bar and as I expected I loved it.
With constant pressure from Connie to learn more about food, our food sources, and the environmental impact of eating meat, who knows, maybe I’ll start making baby steps to eat less animal protein. Perhaps starting with Meatless Monday will help. I know for one thing going meatless sure impacts a budget – beans and rice are much cheaper than meat.
