Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter

Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter

Our furnace is original to our house so it’s been heating our home since the 1970’s. While it’s not energy efficient, we’ve pretty much ignored it because it’s still working. One thing we do to maintain it is to regularly change the filters and I’ve recently been introduced to a new filter, the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter.

When we turn the furnace on for the winter there’s usually a hot moldy smell that announces the arrival of the heating season. It’s unpleasant and takes a day or two to go away. I had no idea that we didn’t have to put up with that smell and that there’s a way to avoid it; just by using the right filter. In fact, it turns out a lot of the odors in homes can be attributed to poor indoor air quality and many homeowners try to mask it with air fresheners.

I stopped using traditional air fresheners a few years ago because of the VOCs they have and I refuse to allow them in my home. I do occasionally burn candles, but only those with non-synthetic fragrances and for the ambiance, not as an air freshener.

The only true way to clear the air is to find the source of the odor and correct it. Sprays and other chemicals may mask it for a short while, but at a cost of all those chemicals that you and your children are breathing in. Plus as soon as they dissipate, the foul odor returns.

Natural Ways to Cut Down Odors in the Home

Lisa Beres, a Building Biologist, healthy living expert, and author suggests the following tips for maintaining a naturally fresh home:

  • Reduce kitchen odors by keeping your fridge clean. Wipe up spills immediately and clean the shelves with baking soda mixed with a few drops of a natural dish soap to make a paste. Use it to scrub the shelves and remove stains. Keep a box of baking soda opened in the refrigerator to trap odors – remember to replace the box every three months.
  • Cooking odors – upgrade to the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter.  It works to trap odors and gases from the air passed through the filter and works to  keep your home fresh,
  • Damp towels – wet towels or clothes can cause a major stink! To get rid of the mildew smell, wash the item in the hottest water it can take and add a cup or two of white vinegar. Then wash it a second time with an eco-friendly or natural laundry detergent. Finally dry the item on high heat. That should solve your problem and you can avoid it in the future by hanging towels up to dry before throwing them in the dirty laundry pile.

We fight massive amounts of dust in our home so I’ll be trying a new Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter the next time we change the furnace filter. I’m looking forward to its odor fighting ability and an improvement in our indoor air quality. The filter is said to cut down on the airborne allergens like mold spores, dust, and pollen. Thankfully none of us have allergies, but mold spores are plentiful here in Seattle.

What’s Different about the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter?

Its unique two-sided design is what makes the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter different. The first side captures the large particles and the second removes the household odors. It uses a carbon web technology which combines “tiny pores of activated carbon with electrostatically charged fibers” which work to trap the gases and odors from the air passed through the filter.

Filters should be changed every three months or so and for those of us without air conditioning that means just twice a year. Changing your filter regularly can help extend the life of your heating and cooling system so it’s important to keep up on the maintenance of it. For those of you with heating and air, that’s a change four times a year or the start of every season and since the new Filtrete costs just about $16, it’s an inexpensive way to remove odors and maintain your system’s health.
