If you look over the years, the styles have changed - the clothes, the hair, the production, the approach to the songs. The icing to the cake has changed flavors. But if you really look at the cake itself, it's really the same. John Oates

John Oates Quote “If You Look Over the Years…”

Who knew John Oates of the singing group Hall & Oats was such a philosopher?!? Of course if you don’t know who John Oates is then you’re too young 🙂 Hall & Oates was a popular band in the late 80’s and 90s (think hair-pop-rock hair band and shiny stretch pants) and we saw them in concert several times. At the time we loved them. Still, I agree with John and think this applies to more than just music.

When I was in my teens and early 20s I thought everyone over 35 was OLD! Now that I’m 50 I’ realize they weren’t and neither am I. I remember thinking that those old people were all lazy and didn’t care about the issues. I was wrong. I remember thinking they couldn’t possibly be as up-to-date on technology and the world as I was. I was wrong.

Now if you’re under 30 you’re thinking, “GAWD, this old woman is delusional!” But mark my words, if you’re lucky enough to make it to 50 you too will be saying the cake is the same, only my icing has changed.
