For most people this week starts the beginning of the summer vacation season. We’ve never been traditional vacationers and it’s actually been a few years since my husband and I have gone on vacation together. Not because we don’t want to, but because of scheduling, money, and work schedules. I generally seem to take a vacation with my mother or kids and the husband stays home to take care of the pets. It’s not ideal, but it’s how it’s been for a few years.
It turns out we’re not alone. According to a survey Embassy Suites conducted with Parents magazine, many families face the same hurdles as we do when it comes to taking vacations. Of those that responded to the survey, 22% say they’re too busy to take time off from work, 22% said their child’s school obligations interfered, and 22% said they found it difficult to coordinate time off with their partners. Our children are no longer in school, but we remember those days well. Now it’s coordinating work schedules for everyone that prevents us from getting away as a family more often.
When the kids were younger we used to vacation closer to home and more often. I miss the trips to the ocean and to eastern Washington, so this year we’ve decided we’re going to do more small vacations rather than one long distance one. Again, it turns out we’re pretty normal here as well. The same survey showed that most families are taking shorter vacations with nearly 1/2 of the respondents (48%) saying that they’ve not taken a vacation of 3-4 nights in the past year and 51% hadn’t taken a trip of 5 nights or more.
To kick off this summer season we’re taking a staycation and making time to get together, play board games, and relive past trips and we’ll be doing it to celebrate my 51st birthday. My only birthday request is to spend some time together, so we’re meeting up at an Embassy Suites just 20 minutes from home to get together, hang out, and laugh about past vacations, and to celebrate the passing of another year. We’ll also be taking advantage of Embassy Suites’ cooked-to-order breakfast and complimentary nightly Manager’s Reception which includes complimentary beverages and appetizers and making it an overnight event. With schedules still questionable, it could just be the husband and I, but it’s the thought that counts and I’m looking forward to spending the night away.
So how do you vacation? Are you doing something close to home or a big trip?
