Warner Bros‘ JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND released this week to home video. The film is a follow-up to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008). Sean (Josh Hutcherson – “Hunger Games“) takes off to find out why a mysterious distress signal is being sent from a location that should be in the middle of the ocean. When his stepfather, played by Dwayne (formerly “The Rock”) Johnson, realizes that he can’t stop the boy from leaving, he joins him in the search. The duo is joined by a helicopter pilot played by Luis Guzman who overlooks the fact that his helicopter isn’t trustworthy enough to make the trip because he needs the money to send his beautiful and feisty daughter, played by Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical“) to college. Yes she comes along for the ride where she becomes a love interest for Hutcherson’s character.
The film is rated PG and there are plenty of special affect scenes to keep the kids happy and parents won’t mind the story line too much. Dwayne Johnson is completely likable and yes, his version of “What a Wonderful World” is sweet. The characters are a bit cheese but considering the age group they’re targeting, it’s probably to be expected. The PG rating seems appropriate and there aren’t too many themes that are worrisome. There’s some defiance on the children’s part and some back talking, but they’re relatively mild in nature.
There are some intense scenes which might be too scary for very young kids, but school age children will likely love it.
