I remember when I used to color my hair for fun. Those days are long over and for the last ten years or so I color my hair because I need to. I’m not going gray gracefully; I’m fighting it every step of the way. I generally use an organic hair dye or I have it colored at the salon, but there’s always that grow out period between appointments. On my hair, the gray roots start to show within 2 weeks of having my hair colored. Since I’m too cheap and too lazy to have my hair dyed every 3-4 weeks, it’s quite common for me to have 1-1/2″ of gray roots showing at any given time.

In the past my only choices were a semi-permanent root touch up or a full re-dye. Both of these methods are messy and take 30-45 minutes. I recently purchased a wand-applied cover which is expensive, takes forever to use, and makes my hair feel dirty – what a waste of money. Now when I need a temporary fix for my gray roots there’s a new product available called Root Concealer by Rita Hazan.  It’s designed to temporarily cover the gray in just a few minutes and is sweat-free and stays put until you shampoo it out.

I agreed to try the new root concealer because of everything that’s it’s not – it’s not made with any parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances or dyes, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMOs, or triclosan.  Awesome, huh!  The downside?  At $24 an ounce, it’s a bit pricey and it’s an aerosol.  With the new non-aerosol pump bottles available, it’s too bad this one isn’t packaged in a more environmentally-friendly package.

HOW’S IT WORK?

Temporarily covering my gray with one quick spray

Temporarily covering my gray with one quick spray

There are 5 colors available to match all hair shades (find the perfect shade)- find the one closest to your overall color for best results.  To cover grays, just spray the Rita Hazan Root Concealer 4″ away from your scalp and allow it to dry.  It’s non-staining and won’t harm your bed linens.

I found I was holding the can too far away but I liked the coverage I was getting. Since the spray color was darker and cooler than my own (medium brown likely would have been a better choice for me), I wanted to overspray just a bit to float the color in so it blended just a little bit better (it’s much more natural in person than the camera shows and my grays are much more noticeable as well).  It dries quickly, can be combed through, covers well, and has no scent.  I did spray my ear directly and it was colored temporarily.  A quick swipe with a face cleanser wipe took care of it.  I would definitely take a moment to check the surrounding skin to be sure there isn’t any errant spray.  Once it’s dry it can be rubbed off with your fingers, but I didn’t find that it transferred to my clothing or bedding.  I suppose the color would have a lot to do with the transfer rate – my color was black/brown.

Sides - before and afterI do feel it in my hair and it does make my hair look a bit dirty, but it’s a small price to pay for the temporary cover-up.  That’s pretty typical with my hair though and I don’t use any product in it because of that, so this isn’t a new phenomenon with my hair.  I would not use this daily or in place of regular dye – it’s too expensive – but for a quick fix before an event or photo, you can be sure I’ll be pulling this out of my beauty arsenal.
