Hey all you readers. Alex here, back with another Blu-Ray movie review. Today I am reviewing the 4-disc combo pack for the Steven Spielberg‘s film, War Horse. This movie follows the incredible story of a horse named Joey bought in 1914 by an English farmer (Peter Mullan). Joey and his new trainer, the farmer’s son Albert (Jeremy Irvine), become inseparable as they learn to plow the rocky soil of the farm together. Unfortunately when the harvest fails the horse is sold to the English army to be used as cavalry in France. During the course of the war Joey is cared for by Captian Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston). After a failed offensive Joey changes hands multiple times between the German army and French citizens living in the country. I don’t want to give away too much of the story here but I can say that the film has a very satisfying ending.
At almost two and half hours long, War Horse does seem a little slow at times. But what it lacks in pacing it makes up for in spot on acting and cinematography. This almost feels like three or four separate stories all mushed together by the constant presence of the film’s most memorable character, the thoroughbred Joey. The most amazing aspect of this movie, in my opinion, is the amount of emotion the filmmakers were able to get onto the screen from the horses. There were some hard to watch scenes in this movie where you could see the fear in Joey’s eyes and others where he seemed genuinely happy and excited. The other actors also did amazing work here, one performance that really stood out to me was that of the french grandfather played by Niels Arestrup. His portrayal of a the protective grandfather was I think, the best in the film.

War Horse is an impressive achievement. I would highly recommend it to anybody over their mid teens, the PG-13 rating for this film is spot on. I would not recommend it for younger children as there are a few scenes with dead or injured people and horses. But overall I would give this at least an 8 out of 10.
