I’m vegetarian and one of the most common questions is, “But what DO you eat?” That questions always makes me giggle because most people eat vegetarian and even vegan foods without knowing it. Being a vegetarian or vegan doesn’t mean all tofu (although it’s one of my favorite foods) and it doesn’t mean doing without some of your childhood favorites.
Granted, like any diet these fat and sugar filled goodies should be eaten in moderation. Losing the animal products from them doesn’t make them lower in fat or calories. I personally believe (and some studies have shown) that including less animal products in our diet is a great thing, but not if we’re substituting processed foods for them. There are color inserts with photos of some of the recipes, but not all of them. I prefer a book that includes a photo for every recipe. The book itself has a retro feel and it’s easy to read and laid out in a logical manner. The recipes are appealing and they offer enough information for even a novice baker or cook.
The 225 animal-friendly recipes included in the VEGAN JUNK FOOD: 225 Sinful Snacks that are Good for the Soul cookbook cover everyday cooking and special holiday baking with recipes like Philly “cheese” fakes and chocolate chunk brownies. For the savory side choose from “bacon” wrapped water chestnuts, barbecue “chicken” pizza, or even jalapeno poppers. If you’re looking for a little sweetness indulge in vegan red velvet whoopie pies, chocolate raspberry muffins, or Hawaiian rum cake. Most ingredients are readily available at larger grocery stores or they can be ordered online.
If you’re thinking about improving your diet and eating more earth-friendly, add a few vegetarian or vegan recipes to your weekly menu. You’ll save money and open up a whole new world of foods to your family and with this book you’ll be able to take back a few of the recipes you are used to making with meat and make them your own.
