ABC Family's Switched at Birth Series ReviewI sometimes skip a new series because I make an assumption about the content or the cast and later find out that I missed out on great TV by making a hasty decision.  That’s the case with ABC Family‘s “Switched at Birth: Volume One.”  I assumed it was targeted to teens so I couldn’t possibly connect with it.  I was wrong.

I watched the entire Switched at Birth: Volume One (10 episodes) this weekend and loved it from the very first moments.  I embraced the characters and cared about what happened to them. I wanted to learn more about them and what brought them to this place. The storyline never felt fake, cheesy, or dumbed down. And they tackled subjects I hadn’t thought of, but ones that could certainly play out in such a situation.

The series is smart, thought provoking and entertaining.  The Switched at Birth cast is brilliant and the two girls playing the lead roles of are simply fabulous.  Katie Leclerc is spot on as the good-girl Daphne Vasquez.  She’s balanced beautifully by Vanessa Marano who plays Bay Kennish, the entitled rich-girl who longs to be an artist.  Each girl pulls off her role without being too cliche and they’re both amazing actresses.

The duo forge a fragile friendship that allows them to navigate this new family that’s been formed by the switch.  There’s tension, triumph, tears, and romances.  Everything that makes a great series.  There are adult themes (pre-marital sex and dating) so it may not be for preteens or it can be a great way to start a discussion between a parent and pre-teen about these subjects.
