Me with Kermit & Miss Piggy on the Jim Henson Studio Lot in LA

I’m a vegetarian so I thought I’d help save a few turkeys by recommending Pig and Frog instead!  What?  A pig and frog?  Yep, and a bear, too!  This smorgasbord will be easy to digest and it’ll cook up a lot of great memories.  Yep, instead of eating a turkey, spend some time in the theater with the MuppetsTheir new movie opens Thanksgiving!

I got the opportunity to meet Miss Piggy and Kermit about a month ago and I hope I don’t spoil this for you….but they’re not real.  They’re puppets.  I know….I know…and next I’ll tell you Santa Claus isn’t real either!  But yes, Kermit & Miss Piggy are both voiced and puppeted by men.  And let me tell you, Miss Piggy’s voice coming out of a dude takes a little getting used to.  But not for long. It’s amazing how quickly I started addressing the puppets instead of the puppeteers.

So what did we talk about? Fashion, movies, and relationships.  But mostly Miss Piggy.  No matter what the topic, it somehow managed to come back around to being all about her.  When ask how she like working at French Vogue, Miss P replied, “I did not really work there.  This is a movie we’re talking about. You all know that, right?  It was, it was lovely. It was lovely. I wish we’d actually shot on location.  Paris, — we shot here in the back lot.”  But how about wearing all those designers’ clothes?  With a smile, Miss P said, “Those are real and it’s wonderful, it’s fabulous. I love to get free clothes from fashion designers”.   Kermit looked over in surprise and asked, “How do you get free clothes? I don’t have a lot of experience with clothes…. I’m sort of like a walking, naked guy.”

The movie is filled with designer clothes, some from “real” designers and we got a chance to check out the wardrobe.  Piggy had a plethora of gloves, in the colors of the rainbow, designer suits, and more. She also had fabulous jewelry to go along with her trade mark string of pearls whose purpose is to hide the seam in her neck.  But who is Piggy’s favorite designer?  “Oh, I don’t want to answer that.  Uh, but when people ask me who I’m wearing I normally say it’s Kermit.  Yes, he’s the one I love to wear the most.  Kermit had a suit, but otherwise he’s easy being green.

The movie plucks Miss Piggy out of the world of fashion and puts her back on stage.  Kermit is there to support her and lend his genuine comic relief.  Miss P & K certainly have a close relationship and they talked about how they met on the Muppets’ show – Piggy having been a showpig for the first half of the number.  It wasn’t long before they were an item, but no ring yet.  Well she wears a ring, but Kermit says it’s because she’s been eating a lot of Cracker Jacks.  P is still waiting for THE ring from her beau.

The duo was charming and stayed in character the entire time.  Even when they were thrown some curve balls.  They were funny and silly and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.  So give the turkey a reprieve and hang with the Muppets.  It’ll be a win-win for everyone (but most especially the turkey!).
