Menopause is one of those things people used to never talk about it.  But now celebrities from Kathy Griffin to Kris Jenner have spoken out about their symptoms of peri-menopause making it more acceptable to acknowledge and accept.  Menopause is a natural part of life, and you don’t have to be miserable.

Dr. Weil Recommends the Following Nutrition, Supplements, and Herbs for Menopause Symptoms

  • Soy foods: While there’s still ongoing research into the safety and efficacy of soy supplements, he’s currently recommending natural soy foods like soy milk, roasted soy nuts, tofu, and tempeh. Soy foods assist in balancing hormone levels. I recommend only eating organic soy because it’s one of the most modified seeds, so it’s high on the GMO list of foods to avoid.
  • FlaxseedDr. Weil recommends buying flax seeds and grinding 1 to 2 tablespoons a day in a coffee grinder. It can be added to nearly any recipe – even cookies and cake! – so it’s one of the easiest supplements to take.
  • Dong quaiWhile this herb has the ability to support and maintain a woman’s natural hormone balance without estrogenic activity, it shouldn’t be taken by any woman who is experiencing heavy bleeding.
  • Black cohoshConsidered an effective hot flash remedy and one of the best-studied traditional herbs for menopause, it seems to work by supporting and maintaining hormonal levels. While many women find the herb works well for them, it’s not effective for everyone.
  • Vitamin E: Some menopausal women find that a daily dose of 400 IUs of natural vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols) helps alleviate hot flashes.
  • B vitaminsThis water-soluble vitamin helps many women deal with the stress of their menopausal symptoms.
  • Evening primrose oil or black currant oilBoth are sources of an essential fatty acid,  gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), that may help to moderate menopausal symptoms.

I’m 50, and I’m knee-deep in peri-menopause, and I’m looking forward to putting this part of my life behind me.  I’m fortunate that so far I’ve not experienced hot flashes or night sweats, but you can be sure should those symptoms pop up, I’ll be making use of something natural like to get me through this stage of life and on to the next exciting chapter in my life.  I for one am happy to be going through “the change” and glad that it’s no longer a taboo subject, it’s a natural part of life.
